MONTAGUE — Authorities confirmed a man’s body was recovered from the Turners Falls Power Canal on Friday at about 4 p.m.
At around 3:30 p.m., a call came in reporting a man, whose identity has not yet been released, had jumped off the 5th Street Bridge into the power canal, according to Montague Police Chief Chris Williams.
“Several 911 calls reported a white male was threatening to jump off the 5th Street Bridge,” Williams said.
Turners Falls Fire Department, Turners Falls ambulance, Montague Police Department and South County EMS responded.
Turners Falls Fire Chief John Zellmann said the Northfield Mountain generating station coordinated with the Fire Department to reduce the amount of water in the canal.
First responders were stationed near the Silvio O. Conte Anadromous Fish Research Laboratory where the body was located, in a wider section of the canal.
Zellmann reported the zodiac boat, which is the smaller of the two boats owned by the Fire Department, was used to easily access the canal because there are no boat ramps. Two first responders entered the canal in the zodiac boat, located the man and brought his body to shore.
