GREENFIELD — Joining the statewide climate strike, a few students from the Academy of Charlemont left school and took to the Common Friday to call for action from elected officials.
“The sad part is this issue shouldn’t even be debated,” Linnea Zimmer, 16, said. “We live so much in our minds that we can just deny such a straightforward issue. There are so many issues you can find a million different opinions and sides on. This issue is just so simple.”
Will Draxler, 15, said hearing about the issues of climate change inspire him to go out and call for legislators, like U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Springfield, to act.
The students heard about the climate strike through friends and social media, inspiring them to walk out of school this year and raise attention to the issue.
“Before I had been staying at home,” Tor Olsson, 16, said, “but we heard about this and said we wanted to go out.”
