At the PVIAC postseason basketball meeting last week the league All-Stars were decided with plenty of representation from Franklin County.
Frontier Regional had four total representatives: Carsten and Peter Carey, Kalen Evans and Amelia Sobieski from the girls team.
The Red Hawks boys’ team won the Hampshire North league on their way to the Western Massachusetts Division III semifinals before a loss to Narragansett.
Sobieski led the Red Hawks in scoring as a sophomore.
Greenfield’s Owen Phelps and Mason Meadows represented Greenfield.
The Frontier and Greenfield’s boys teams both play in the Hamphire North league.
Pioneer Valley Regional sharpshooter Garrett Cote was an All-Star in the Hampshire South league along with teammates Troy Emond and Jared Hubbard.
Cote was a three year starter for the Panthers.
“Garrett’s three years speak for themselves,” Pioneer coach Scott Thayer said. “He put in the time and effort to improve as a basketball player mentally and physically. He is one of the better players in Western Mass.”
Emond just completed his sophomore season, improving his offense and can affect the game on defense.
Hubbard jumped right into the starting lineup this season for Pioneer and displayed confidence as a young player.
“His feel for the game is beyond his years,” Thayer said. “He can take and make shots which is uncanny for a freshman. His ceiling is yet to be reached.”
The Panthers were the league champions in the South.
From Turners Falls boys team Tyler Lavin, Chace Novak and Anthony Peterson all made the team out of the Hampshire South league.
“Tyler was a team leader on and off the floor,” Turners coach Garry Mullins said. “We went as Tyler went.”
Peterson was a threat for a double-double every time he played for the Thunder while Novak was a player who had the ability to get hot for Turners.
“He (Novak) was capable of carrying the load for us,” Mullins said.
For the Mahar boys, point guard Charlie Barnes made the Hampshire South squad.
Greenfield’s Raegan Hickey, Samantha Smith and Katie Haselton made the Franklin North team.
Haselton is only a sophomore and already has 835 career points for the Wave.
For the girls team, Dabney Rollins made the Franklin South team for the Thunder.
For the Mahar Regional girls team, sophomore Micalyn Mailloux made her first Franklin North all star team after scoring double-figures in every game except one this season for the Senators.
Athol High School’s Haley Bigwood made the Franklin South team.
Also in the Franklin South, Pioneers’ Olivia Rowe and Paige Loughman received All-Star status for their efforts for the Panthers.
“Rowe has been a force under the basket her four years scoring, rebounds and blocking,” Pioneer coach Meg Burrinton said. “She is one of the best in the area.”
Loughman is only a sophomore playing point guard for the Panthers.
“She has the ability to take over a game,” Burrington said. “She sees the floor well.”
For the Mohawk girls, Ashley Reynolds and Grace Poplawski made the Franklin West team.
In the Tri County North league, Jordan Hurlbert for Franklin County Technical School was an All-Star.
Also in the Tri County North league, Franklin Tech’s Garrett Cole made the team.
Cole was Tech’s leading scorer.
