GILL — During Sunday morning’s snow and sleet, an on-duty Gill police officer was involved in a two-car accident.
Around 10 a.m. an accident was reported involving a police cruiser and another vehicle on Route 2 near Setback Lane. The officer was the only person in his cruiser. There were four people in the other car.
Gill Police Chief Christopher Redmond said there were injuries reported, and three ambulances responded. Injured parties, including the officer, were taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. The identities and injuries were not made available.
The accident was reported by the officer who was involved. Redmond said the officer was treated and released on Sunday. He was not immediately identified.
Preliminary reports indicate an eastbound vehicle crossed the center line colliding with the westbound cruiser, according to Redmond.
Massachusetts State Police troopers from the Shelburne Falls barracks are investigating. Erving, Montague and Gill police responded along with mutual aid from Turners Falls Fire Department, Northfield ambulance, AMR ambulance and Gill fire and rescue.
“The accident caused major damage to both vehicles,” Redmond said. “Our vehicle is a 2013 Ford Police Interceptor, so it’s about six years old.”
Both vehicles were towed and Route 2 was closed short time, Redmond said. Then alternating traffic lanes were used until the road opened up again.
“It’s a common area for accidents,” Redmond said. “There have been two … fatal accidents there in recent years. It’s a bad corner there and it was definitely slippery out when I was going there.”
