After a tough two-game stretch, Makai Mason and the Baylor men’s basketball team seemed to right the ship on Monday night.

The Greenfield native helped the Bears end a two-game skid with a 59-53 victory over Oklahoma in Waco, Texas, completing a season-sweep of the Sooners.

Baylor improved to 16-8 on the season, and 7-4 in Big 12 play, which puts them tied for third in the conference behind league-leading Kansas State (18-5, 8-2) and second-place Kansas (19-6, 8-4). Baylor is tied with Iowa State and Texas Tech at 7-4 in conference play.

It has been an interesting two weeks for Mason and the Bears. On Feb. 2, Mason scored a career-high 40 points at home and Baylor crushed Texas Christian University, 80-64, to remain tied atop the Big 12 standings with Kansas State. That performance helped Baylor to its sixth straight victory and earned Mason Big 12 Player of the Week honors, his first of the season.

One week ago, on Feb. 6, Mason and the Bears visited Texas, which ended the winning streak as Baylor fell at home for only the fourth time all season with a 84-72 loss. Mason was held to just 5 points in that game. Part of the reason for his low output could be contributed to the fact that he was dealing with a toe/foot injury, which kept Mason out of Baylor’s game on Saturday at home against Big 12-leading Kansas State. Adding to the Bears’ issues was the team’s second-best guard King McClure was also out with a minor injury. Missing both players contributed to Baylor’s 70-63 home loss.

The good news for both Mason and the Bears is that he returned Monday night against Oklahoma after missing just the one game and while he scored just six points, he dished out eight assists to help Baylor get back on track and remain in the Big 12 race.

Mason is currently fourth in the Big 12 in points per game with 15.6 and is ninth in the league in assists per game at 3.3.

Baylor has another big game on Saturday when it heads to Texas Tech at 2 p.m. to face the Red Raiders, who are ranked 15th in the country. That game will be televised on ESPN. The Bears then head to 23rd-ranked Iowa State Tuesday night at 9.
