For the second time in less than a month, the Greenfield High School hockey team added a name to its 100-point banner Friday night.

Junior forward Bryan Baumann recorded a hat trick and added three assists, and his six-point night got him to the No. 100 plateau as the host Green Wave thumped Gardner, 8-1, in an independent contest at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Baumann, who joined Doug Hanieski as Greenfield players in the century club when he did it last month against Wahconah, achieved the feat 6 minutes, 18 seconds into the third period. The Frontier Regional School student took a feed from Kyle Barnes and finished off his hat trick for career point No. 100.

“Bryan, only a junior, being able to do that is something that’s really special,” lauded Greenfield head coach Adam Bouchard of Baumann. “Bryan’s the kid at practice working just as hard as he is in games. That truly shows in his game. You can tell he puts the work in.”

Baumann recorded three points in the first period, two in the second and added the tally in the third.

“We’re certainly proud,” said Bouchard. “It’s a personal goal for every player when they come in and play high school hockey, to reach that plateau. Having him and Dougie reach it is very special. That’s two players who came over when the (co-operative) merger happened. It’s something not only special for them but the rest of their teammates as well.”

Greenfield (10-1-2) stormed out to a 3-0 lead after one period, doubled the lead after two frames and put things away in the third. Adam Savoy, Mike McGoldrick, Barnes, Aidan Roche and Jacob Bryant all found the back of the net. Barnes added three assists, Roche had two, Bryant had one and Will Averill also notched a helper.

Jamison Howland broke up the shutout for Gardner, tallying in the third period for the visitors.

Greenfield held a 34-13 edge in shots, with goalkeeper Riley Drew making 12 saves.

The two teams turn right back around and play again tonight, with the rematch set for Gardner Veterans Arena at 5:30.

“Every day you wake up and start fresh,” said Bouchard of the rematch following a lopsided victory. “This game is over. The score is 0-0 when the puck drops again.”

Groton-Dunstable 57, Greenfield 47 — The only losses for Greenfield this winter have come from out of area teams.

On the road against a strong Division 2 program from central Mass., the Green Wave took just its second loss of the season Friday night, falling to Groton-Dunstable, 57-47, in an independent contest in Groton.

“Well-fought game,” offered Greenfield coach John Hickey. “(Groton-Dunstable was a) very physical and tall team.”

The Green Wave (13-2) actually led 23-20 at halftime, before Bronwyn Mulligan (22 points) and the Crusaders turned the tides and outscored them by a 36-24 margin after intermission to capture the home win.

Samantha Smith’s 15 points were tops for Greenfield. Raegan Hickey followed with 14 points and Katie Haselton added 10, while Racquel Provost notched 7 points.

The only other loss for the Wave this year came against Div. 1 South sectional foe Whitman-Hanson back in December. The squad looks to bounce back Monday night at Athol.

Lenox 42, Frontier 25 — Sophie Patella scored 21 points and Lenox defeated Frontier, 42-25, in an independent girls basketball game Friday night in Lenox.

Frontier struggled on offense on the night, falling behind 18-12 in the first half and managing just 13 points after halftime.

Amelia Sobieski scored 12 points in the loss, and Olivia Deane added 8.

Mahar 62, Greenfield 43 — Behind a balanced scoring attack and another strong defensive effort, Mahar closed out its season sweep of Greenfield with a 62-43 independent win Friday night in Orange.

The Senators (12-4), which also beat Greenfield 49-42 less than two weeks ago, stormed ahead, 14-5, after one quarter, and took a commanding 33-13 lead at intermission.

“Our press, we didn’t get a lot of turnovers out of it, but we were able to give them a hard time,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said of Greenfield. “They were disoriented. Our 3-2 (zone) was certainly productive in the first half as well.”

Mahar had six players score six points or more, as Deven Patch powered the hosts with 13 points. Evan Lyesiuk scored 11 points, Charlie Barnes added 9 points to go with seven assists and four steals and Daesean Watson followed with 8. Jordan Desrosiers (7 points) and Jacob Tenney (6) also contributed offensively, while Jakob Carron pulled down 10 rebounds.

Greenfield (7-8) received a team-high 15 points from Mason Meadows. Ryan Cote tallied 8 points and Owen Phelps tossed in 7.

Pioneer 59, Mohawk 39 — Troy Emond poured in 25 points in the first half and Pioneer pulled away from Mohawk early en route to a 59-39 victory at Messer Gymnasium in Northfield.

Emond scored two points early in the second half but suffered an injury early on and had to leave the game.

Pioneer (13-2) led 21-8 after one quarter and 39-16 at halftime.

Ryan Cote had 11 points, and Jared Hubbard added 9 points.

Owen Cross finished with 13 points to pace Mohawk (4-11), Jackson Hicks added 11 points, and Reuben Bassett chipped in 6 points.

Turners 63, Smith Academy 51 — Turners Falls continues to make a late-season push to get into the postseason.

The Thunder overcame a slow start to pull away from Smith Academy in the second half en route to a 63-51 victory in an independent game Friday night in Hatfield.

Turners Falls scored just six points in the first quarter and still trailed 20-17 at halftime.

“We started very slow,” Turners assistant Jay Liimatainen said. “They came out on us and took a 10-0 lead. We weren’t moving the ball and we couldn’t knock anything down.

The third quarter saw a change in fortune for the visitors, who used a 27-14 edge to help the Thunder take the lead for good.

“We really started to pick up the tempo,” Liimatainen said. “Going inside out. We got the ball in to Ant (Anthony Peterson) and he passed out of that. Our defense also got us going in the second half. In that third quarter, we got some nice run outs on things.”

The victory brings Turners back to the .500 mark on the season with four games to play. Turners needs two wins to qualify for the postseason.

“We know going forward that every game we go into we need to win,” Liimatainen said. “If we lose a game, we will have our backs against the wall.”

Tyler Lavin poured in 21 points in the win, and Chace Novak had 13 points. Jeremiah Russell scored 10 points, Peterson netted 8 points, Ryan Campbell had 6 points, and Kyle Dodge notched 5 points.

Brett Gratz had 26 points for the Falcons, while Jack Zygmont finished with 13 points.

Frontier 66, Belchertown 39 — Just one day after a huge win over Division 1 West Springfield, there was no letdown for Frontier on Friday night.

The host Red Hawks finished off the second night of a back-to-back, thumping Belchertown, 66-39, in an independent contest at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

“We’ve had a pretty mentally strong group the past couple of seasons,” Frontier coach Ben Barshefsky said. “The back-to-back nights haven’t fazed us. That’s attributed to the upperclassmen we’ve got here.”

It was win No. 13 in a row for the Red Hawks, which continue to roll at 14-1 overall.

Carsten Carey stayed hot offensively, going for 27 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in the victory. Kalen Evans joined him in double figures with 12 points, followed by Timmy Barrington with 7 points, Peter Carey and Gabe Jones-Thomson with 5 apiece, and Owen Walkowicz with 4.

Belchertown (6-9), which didn’t put a player in double figures, trailed 13-6 after one quarter and 28-16 at halftime.

Hopkins 80, Athol 59 — Mark Ferrari scored a career-high 35 points on Friday night but it wasn’t enough as Athol fell to Hopkins, 80-59, in an independent game in Hadley.

Ferrari had 12 field goals and eight free throws for the Red Raiders. Brymere Edwards and Maysin Tarbell each had 7 points.

Andrew Ciaglo led Hopkins with 29 points, and Caleb Graves added 14.

Wrestling

FC Tech 48, Duggan 24 — Franklin Tech wrestlers registered six pins on Friday night to close out the dual meet season with a 48-24 win over Duggan Academy in an independent meet in Turners Falls.

The Eagles will end the regular season today at home for the Eagle Duals before seeds for the WMass Division 3 tournament are revealed Sunday morning. Franklin Tech will host the one-day Division 3 wrestling tournament one week from today.
