COLRAIN – A passerby put out a kitchen stove fire with a “large glass of water” in Colrain on Thursday, averting what might possibly have been a more extensive fire.
Rick Gay, a resident of Halifax, Vt., said he entered the house around 2 p.m., located at 121 Thompson St., after seeing smoke coming out of the windows.
Once in the house Gay filled a glass with water and doused the small fire, he said.
The fire started on the stove top and moved to the exhaust hood and the cupboards above it, Malcolm Sumner, assistant fire chief from Halifax, Vt., said on the scene. Firefighters from Colrain, Shelburne and Halifax responded.
Gay said the home belongs to Stephen Gibbons.
