Fact: the average single-family tax bill in Greenfield is on the low end compared with other cities and towns.
According to the state Department of Revenue, as of fiscal year 2018, Greenfield’s average tax bill ranked 230th among the state’s 351 municipalities. It’s the assessed value of your house — and not just the tax rate — that controls how much you actually pay. Towns like Greenfield that still have comparatively affordable single-family homes tend to have lower property tax bills.
Maybe I’ve missed it, but I haven’t seen this fact mentioned in the recent library debate. It is misleading for opponents of the project to suggest that Greenfield homeowners pay comparatively high property taxes. We don’t.
