GREENFIELD — Since federal government workers are no longer getting paid, the Second Congregational Church in downtown Greenfield is hosting a free meal for those affected and their families, Monday at 5 p.m.
The dinner has no religious or political angle and no scheduled speakers, said the Rev. Corey J. Sanderson: “This is neighbors caring about neighbors.”
After doors open at 5 p.m., dinner is served at 5:30. On the menu: chicken with mushroom sauce, mashed potatoes and green beans; and for vegetarians, chickpea stew with vegetables. There will also be homemade bread, coffee, tea and juice. Desert is angel cake with whipped cream.
The Second Congregational Church frequently holds events to address food insecurity, Sanderson said, like a program in the summer to feed kids who are normally fed at school. With this most recent failure of the federal government, the church noticed a definite need, Sanderson said.
“It’s creating a lot of unnecessary pain,” he said. “There are so many people whose lives are being affected directly. Then there’s the indirect effect of hurting families, and in addition stressing relationships at work.”
Organizers ask attendees to RSVP with your name and the number of people joining you by Sunday night at office@greenfieldsecondchurch.com or 413-774-4355.
