I have to counter Verne Sund’s idea that Greenfield is “to cite an old phrase, too big for its britches” in its pursuit of a new library, a wastewater treatment plant, and a fire station. This, is the kind of thinking that has left the city, to cite another old phrase, “behind the 8-ball” for far too long. Investing in such projects reflects the energy and optimism that will make the Greenfield a more comfortable and attractive community and may, ultimately, lower taxes.
In becoming a city, Greenfield gave up nothing that it had not already lost a long time ago. Now, our challenge is to build a strong and vibrant city for everyone, or to wind up – to cite yet-a-third old phrase – “holding the short end of the stick.”
