An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
It seems that’s all that was needed Tuesday, as there were no reported vehicle crashes resulting from the light snowfall and two area department heads said an early-morning pre-treatment kept roads safe for drivers.
“The roads are excellent,” Marlo Warner II, director of the Greenfield Department of Public Works, said early Tuesday afternoon, adding that he estimates a half-inch of snow fell on the city. “I wish they were all this easy.”
Warner came on as director on Oct. 1, after a 2½-year stint in Hadley that followed 16½ years working for Greenfield. He said the only real snowstorm since he took over came in November.
He said some of his crew members pre-treated the roads with salt around 2:30 a.m.
Sunderland Highway Superintendent George Emery said the roads in his town were fine Tuesday. He estimates an inch of snow fell in the north part of Sunderland, while the southern portion got less than that. He, like Warner, said his crew pretreated the roads around 2 a.m. He explained his department’s pre-treatment consists of a mixture of sand purchased from Delta Sand and Gravel, Inc. in Sunderland and salt from either Eastern Minerals Inc. or Champion Salt.
Nicholas Licata, a dispatcher at the Greenfield Police Department, said there were no reported accidents Tuesday. The same was true for a dispatcher at Shelburne Control when contacted by The Recorder.
