Behind a pair of goals and an assist from Matt Lavoine, Gilmore & Farrell Insurance and Dillon Chevrolet FCHA Green clipped Amherst, 6-2, in a Greater Springfield League Bantam North Division hockey game Sunday at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Matt Provencal scored a goal and notched two assists for FCHA, while Hunter Smith and Billy Woodall each added a goal and an assist. Sam Knight had the other goal, with assists coming from Eathon Bryant and MJ Paulin.

Goaltender Trevor Parkinson recorded 32 saves in a strong effort, with the defense of Bryant, Paulin, Dylan Archer and Chris Phelps doing the job in front of him.

• In action Saturday, FCHA fell to the Eaglebrook School JV team, 2-1, at Alfond Arena in Deerfield.

Lavoine scored the FCHA goal on an assist by Trevor Kuchieski. Jayson Smith played well offensively and Parkinson made 26 saves. Bryant, Archer, Phelps and Hunter Smith played well on defense.

Youth basketball

Pioneer SL wins

Behind a huge outing from Brayden Thayer, Pioneer capped an undefeated weekend Sunday with a 64-29 win over Southampton in a Suburban League grades 5 and 6 boys basketball game.

Thayer poured in a game-high 23 points to help pace Pioneer. Braeden Tsipenyuk joined him in double figures with 12 points, followed by Ethan Mauthe’s 8 points.

Southampton was led by Tom O’Connor’s 8 points.

The weekend kicked off with a 66-21 defeat of Turners Falls on Saturday.

Tsipenyuk scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the first half to help jumpstart the Pioneer offense. Kurt Redeker followed with 16 points, while Thayer (13 points) and Gavin Gammell (11) made it four players in double figures en route to the win.

Turners’ Josiah Little led his squad with 9 points.

• Despite 24 points and 20 rebounds from Sam Glazier, the Pioneer grades 7 and 8 team was edged Sunday by Southampton, 61-53, in Northfield.

Josh Wood scored 11 points for Pioneer, with teammates Sean Turners (8) and Jake Brook (7) also contributing.

Southampton had six players score at least eight points in the victory.

Greenfield SL sweeps

Jerry Ven scored 12 points, and Greenfield edged Frontier, 42-39, in a Suburban League grades 5 and 6 boys game Sunday in Deerfield.

Caleb Thomas was also in double figures for Greenfield with 10 points, and Jackson Campbell added 8 points.

In action Saturday, Greenfield picked up a 35-27 win over Southampton behind 16 points from Ven and 15 from Thomas.

Frontier girls victorious

Big all-around efforts from Claire Kirkendall and Margaret Edwards helped Frontier pick up a 26-12 win over Easthampton Sunday in a Suburban League grades 5 and 6 girls basketball game at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

Kirkendall scored 8 points to go with eight rebounds and six steals, while Edwards also registered 8 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Lilly Warchol tossed in 4 points, five boards and five steals in the victory.

Deerfield results

The Deerfield Academy girls hockey team continued to play well with the calendar turned to 2019 Saturday, as the Big Green blanked Lawrenceville, 2-0, to improve to 6-4-1 overall on the season.

The DA boys squash team joined the hockey team in the winners’ circle with a 5-2 win over Belmont Hill, while the wrestling team went 1-2 at the Pomfret Quad with a win over Williston (54-12) paired with losses to Pomfret (53-22) and Suffield (54-24).

The basketball teams were both beaten on Saturday. The boys team dropped a 59-46 decision to Williston and the girls team fell to Worcester, 69-37.

The boys hockey team lost a shootout to Salisbury, 7-5.

F.C. Babe Ruth meeting

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League will hold a meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at St. Kazimierz Society in Turners Falls on the first floor.

Topics will include the player college scholarship fund, committee and executive board openings, national charter and plans for the 2019 season. All parents of those players that have aged out of area Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken programs are encouraged to attend this informational meeting.
