Amelia Sobieski nearly posted a triple-double, and host Frontier Regional School got into the win column after a tough loss to Palmer in its opener last week. The Red Hawks settled in to clip Mahar Regional School, 44-40, in Franklin County League North girls basketball action Tuesday night at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

“It was a tough week (following the Palmer loss),” said Frontier coach Rick Recore of the 65-50 defeat ion Dec. 11. “The girls had that time off, and their energy at practice was very focused in getting back on track. We started having a little trouble with (Mahar’s) press. We had to make some adjustments and the girls did a terrific job stabilizing what was in place and adjusting to what Mahar was doing to them.”

Sobieski scored 14 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and contributed seven blocks in a stellar all-around game inside for the Red Hawks (1-1, 1-0). Marie Diemand scored 12 points and Olivia Deane added 10, while Charlotte Doulette had a solid outing with 6 points and 10 boards.

“The ball security tonight with Marie Diemand and Olivia Deane … they handled the pressure and made their teammates better,” Recore said.

Tori Tenney and Micalyn Mailloux led Mahar (1-3, 0-1) with 13 points apiece. Siobhan Davis chipped in 5 points.

“As long as I’ve been back at Frontier, Mahar has always been a well-coached, disciplined, physical team,” Recore said. “They play a style that suits their program very well. It was a tough, hard-fought win for the team.”

Things only get tougher for Frontier, as it welcomes Greenfield to town Friday night for another FCL North contest.

Greenfield 84, Athol 33 — After dispatching a pair of Division 1 foes to open the season, the Greenfield juggernaut continued to roll with its Franklin County League North opener Tuesday night.

The host Green Wave jumped out to a 30-0 lead after one quarter and knocked off Athol in FCL North action at Nichols Gymnasium.

Greenfield (3-0, 1-0) received points from 10 players in the win. Senior Samantha Smith scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Raegan Hickey, Katie Haselton and Tina Reed all joined her in double figures with 12 points. Hickey filled up the box score to the tune of seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals, while Reed just missed a double-double with nine boards. Racquel Provost made it five Green Wave scorers in double figures with 10 points to go with seven boards, while Kelsey Richardson and Bry Rivera had 6 points apiece and Madyson Kuchieski tossed in 4 points.

Athol (2-1, 0-1) was led offensively by Haley Bigwood (11 points) and Sophie Putnam (10). The Red Raiders scored 20 of their 33 points in the fourth quarter.

Athol meets Narragansett Thursday at 5:30.

Mohawk 42, FC Tech 18 — A strong effort on the defensive end of the floor propelled Mohawk to its first victory of the season Tuesday night.

The host Warriors stormed out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter en route to an independent win over Franklin Tech in an independent tilt in Buckland.

“Our defense won it for us tonight,” said Mohawk coach Larissa Harrison, whose team used a similar formula to last year’s 35-14 win over the Eagles. “I was pretty happy with that. Our hustle and effort did the job.”

Grace Poplawski was the lone player in double figures, dropping 10 points to pace Mohawk (1-2). Ashley Reynolds followed with 9 points while Mya Lesieur and Stella Clark had 6 points each.

Jocelyn Crowningshield was the high-scorer for Franklin Tech (1-3) with 8 points. Isabelle Duga added 7 points and Jordan Hurlbert followed with 3.

The Warriors tackle FCL West action Friday night with a road trip to play Smith Academy.

Southwick 43, Turners 42 (OT) — For the second time in as many games, Turners Falls found itself on the wrong side of an overtime decision.

The Thunder had two chances to take the lead late in overtime, but Southwick held on to capture a FCL South victory Tuesday in Turners Falls.

The Powertown (0-3, 0-1) lost to Athol, 56-55, in overtime last week.

“I give the girls credit, they continued to fight and played with their heads high in the fourth quarter and overtime,” Turners coach Ed Marvell said. “They didn’t give up.”

Turners trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, but battled back and forced OT with the score tied 40-40.

Southwick’s Maura Wurster, who finished with 20 points in the win, hit a 3-pointer in the extra session for a 43-40 advantage. Turners cut the deficit to 43-42 with a pair of free throws, and the hosts had a chance to take the lead after stealing the ball with eight seconds to play.

“We got too excited, I think, and turned it over on a travel,” Marvell said.

Southwick missed two free throws, giving Turners one more chance, but with just 1.4 seconds remaining, the team wasn’t able to get the ball down the floor in time to get a shot off.

Dabney Rollins poured in a game-high 21 points for the Thunder. Aly Murphy added 8 points and Karissa Fleming followed with 6.

Turners, which shot 14-for-32 from the free throw line in the loss, is right back at it tonight against Lenox.
