Jacob Bryant scored a pair of third-period goals to help the Greenfield High School hockey team to a 3-3 tie with Belchertown Saturday night at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

The Green Wave (2-0-1) trailed 2-1 entering the third and a goal by Vaughn Gillen three minutes into the frame gave the visiting Orioles a two-goal cushion.

Greenfield stormed back beginning with 8 minutes, 52 seconds to play as Bryant broke up a play at the Belchertown blue line and skated into the zone and fired a slap shot past Orioles’ goalie Ethan Rajpold to cut the deficit to one. Four minutes later, with 4:50 to play and Greenfield on the power play, Aiden Roache fired a shot from the point that Rajpold made a save on but Bryant pounced on the rebound and buried it to tie the score.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the final five minutes. The Green Wave nearly won the game in the final seconds as Aurel Pydych broke in on Rajpold but the Orioles’ goalie made a glove save to preserve the tie.

They really took it to us in the first period, really, for much of the first two periods,” Greenfield coach Adam Bouchard said. “I was happy to see the Green Wave not fold even though we were down two goals with 12 minutes to play.”

Belchertown scored the only goal of the first period as Matt Pacheco scored from Nathan Ayers at the midway point. Greenfield tied the game 19 seconds into the second period as Doug Hanieski scored from Bryan Baumann, but Belchertown reclaimed the lead in the middle of the period when Cody Lambert scored an unassisted goal.

Both goalies played well. Riley Drew made 17 saves in the Wave net, while Rajpold stopped 20 shots in the Orioles’ goal.
