DEERFIELD — A white Honda Civic struck three vehicles as it traveled south on Routes 5 and 10 from the Cheapside Bridge between Greenfield and Old Deerfield Friday, finally coming to a halt after hitting something head-on.
It wound up facing south on the side of the northbound lane around 1:52 p.m. near 704 Greenfield Road, past the Wok restaurant. It’s unclear what the Honda hit that stopped it.
A man removed from the Honda was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the four-vehicle crash, Deerfield Police Det. Adam Sokoloski said. He said the man’s injuries were serious but did not appear to be life threatening. The front end of his vehicle was destroyed. Sokoloski said the accident is under investigation.
“No other people that were involved were injured,” he said. “At this time we will not be releasing any names or additional information while the crash remains under investigation.”
The man was removed from the car’s driver side by members of South County EMS and placed on a stretcher and into an ambulance, which left the scene at 2:21 p.m., driven by Director Zachary Smith.
Traffic was initially halted and then eventually opened to one lane before two-lane traffic restarted. The Old Deerfield Fire Department and the Greenfield Police Department also responded. The Honda and another vehicle farther south were towed by Koch’s Automotive. About the same time, there was another car on the Greenfield side of the bridge that seemed to have been sideswiped and left unattended.
The accident occurred on the same road that was the site of a crash on Dec. 5, when a pickup rear-ended a dump truck that had become disabled on the side of the road. That crash sent two men to the hospital.
