South Deerfield Lighting of the Common Nov. 30

DEERFIELD — The South Deerfield Women’s Club will host the community Lighting of the Town Common from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 30. There will be live music, singing, hot chocolate and home-baked cookies, a welcoming of the Common’s winter herd of lighted decorative deer, and the lighting of the Common’s trees and fountain. This event is open to the public and free of charge. Contributions to the donations box on the night of the event are welcome.

A second part of the lighting program is called Keeping the Deer in Deerfield, a South Deerfield Women’s Club’s community-building effort to create a festive, one-of-a-kind winter environment that is uniquely Deerfield’s by encouraging business owners and residents to place lighted decorative deer in highly visible locations at their business entrances and in their yards. Last year, in addition to the Common’s herd, more than 35 lighted deer were spotted in locations throughout town. Program organizers anticipate expanding the herd this year and in the following years.

To help support the South Deerfield Women’s Club’s ongoing fundraising for the community Lighting of the Common and Keeping the Deer in Deerfield programs, the town established a Light the Common Fund. Checks in any amount can be sent to: Town of Deerfield, “Light the Common” Fund, 8 Conway Street, South Deerfield, MA 01373. The program received support this year from the South Deerfield Lions Club, The Polish American Citizens Club of South Deerfield, and others. Historic Deerfieldaccepting applications for summer fellowship

DEERFIELD — Historic Deerfield is now accepting applications for its 2019 undergraduate summer fellowship program in early American history and material culture. According to Historic Deerfield, the intensive, nine-week tuition-free program gives college students the opportunity to explore history and material culture studies, conduct original research, and experience working at a museum.

College juniors (graduating in 2020), and seniors who expect to graduate in 2019 are eligible for seven openings in the program designed for undergraduate students in American studies, architecture, archaeology, art and art history, design, history, material culture, preservation and museum studies. Each participant receives a full fellowship covering all expenses associated with the program, including tuition, room and board, and field trips. A limited number of stipends are awarded to students who have demonstrated a need to help cover lost summer income. Financial aid is need-blind and application for assistance has no impact on the program application.

The 2019 program begins June 10 and ends Aug.12. Applications are accepted online at www.historic-deerfield.org/sfp. The application deadline is Feb.8, 2019. Notification of acceptances will be announced in March.
