Police: 2 of 3 women found at Springfield home were bound

SPRINGFIELD — Newly released court documents say two of the three women whose bodies were found at a man’s home in May had been bound with electrical cords and cables.

Stewart Weldon, of Springfield, is being held without bail after pleading not guilty to 52 charges, including three murder counts.

The Republican newspaper reports the documents released Thursday do not shed new light on how the women died, but offer a more complete account of the evidence found at the 41-year-old Weldon’s home, including bindings on the women’s hands and feet.

Authorities have only said the women died of “homicidal violence.”

Weldon is due back in court on Jan. 18.

His attorney has not commented on the specifics of the case but has said his client looks forward to defending himself.

Springfield shooting victim dies

SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield man injured in a shooting earlier this month has died, and authorities have launched a homicide investigation.

Police say 48-year-old Jesus Flores was hit by gunfire on the night of Nov. 3.

A spokesman for the Hampden district attorney says Flores died at the hospital Tuesday.

The shooting occurred at about 10:40 p.m. Police responded to the city’s automated gunfire detection system and found Flores on the sidewalk with at least one gunshot wound.

Friends say Flores worked at a city restaurant, had a long-time partner and a 13-year-old son.

No arrests have been announced.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.

Teacher on leave after recording device found in bathroom

BELLINGHAM — A teacher has been placed on leave while the school and police investigate allegations he recorded a student using the faculty bathroom.

Bellingham schools Superintendent Peter Marano told parents this week that the teacher at Bellingham Memorial School was “removed from the classroom” on Nov. 9.

The teacher’s name has not been made public because the investigation is ongoing and no criminal charges have been announced.

The teacher has coached at the school for 14 years and also coaches baseball.

Police say a 14-year-old boy told a school resource officer last week that when a coach told him he could use the faculty bathroom, the boy found a box with a hole and a cellphone recording inside.

Citgo sign closer to landmark status with commission vote

BOSTON — The Boston Landmark Commission has approved landmark status for the famed Citgo sign in Kenmore Square.

The commission voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve the status for the sign following a two-year campaign from local preservationists and Citgo Petroleum Corp. to ensure the 60-foot sign retains its place in Boston’s skyline.

The commission issued a report last month recommending landmark status, saying the sign has become a cultural symbol in Boston “far beyond gasoline.”

A spokeswoman for Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh says he will take the recommendation into consideration. Walsh has 15 days to either deny the designation or send it to the Boston City Council for final approval.
