Supporting Question 1

If it wasn’t for nurses to spend unlimited time with patients I probably wouldn’t be here to talk about it.

In October 1992 I had a hip replacement at Baystate Franklin. The operation took place on Wednesday, and Saturday afternoon I started to feel very bad. The nurse on the afternoon shift, Joan McQuade, recognized my deteriorating condition and began staying continuously at my bedside. Whenever she had to leave a replacement nurse would take over. Another nurse would take over at the shift change.

On Sunday I had stomach X-rays taken every hour until they decided to operate to relieve the pressure in my small colon.

The continuous watch by those dedicated nurses is, I believe, saved my life.
