Nehemias Ramirez scored with 17 minutes remaining, enabling visiting Springfield School of Science & Technology to salvage a 1-1 draw against host Pioneer Valley Regional School Monday in a McGrath Division boys soccer game in Northfield.
The game was scoreless into the second half, when Nate Mousseau gave Pioneer (5-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 McGrath) a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute on a goal with an assist from Jack Loud.
It stayed that way until the 63rd minute, when Ramirez equalized and allowed the Cybercats (4-0-1, 2-0-1) to avoid their first loss of the season.
Pioneer goalkeeper Ryan Underwood recorded five saves, while Sci-Tech counterpart Gabriel Camacho made seven saves.
Pioneer has a huge game on Thursday when fellow McGrath powerhouse Mahar comes to Northfield.
FC Tech 9, Duggan 2 — Jovanni Ruggiano netted a hat trick, while a host of players found their name on the score sheet in Franklin Tech’s convincing 9-2 victory over Duggan Academy in a Tri-County League boys soccer game Monday in Turners Falls.
Franklin Tech (7-1 overall, 6-0 TCL) remained atop the TCL standings with the win. The Eagles led 6-0 at halftime.
Will Turn, Ryan Campbell, Will Rosenberg, Eugene Bufford, Jared Vielmetti-Perusse and Jake Shearer all tallied in the victory. Bufford, Dylan Lau, Josh Brunelle and Reuben Galvez added assists.
Matt Regnier came on in relief of Grayson Funk and made two saves for Franklin Tech.
Duggan’s Alex Ramirez scored both goals for his team.
Pioneer 3, Athol 1 — Some formation changes and lineup tinkering enabled Pioneer to score its first goal of the season in a loss on Saturday. Fast forward two days, and the Panthers took it a step further and picked up their first victory.
Sammie Martinez scored a pair of goals, including the go-ahead tally in the 33rd minute, to help host Pioneer get into the win column with a 3-1 victory over Athol in an independent girls soccer game Monday night in Northfield.
“I think we finally found something that works,” said Pioneer coach Nikki Pullen of her team. “We’ve just been in a rut because we haven’t been able to score so we changed some things around. Tonight was the best playing I’ve seen from this team.”
Grace Dufour gave visiting Athol (5-5) a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the game with an unassisted goal.
Azemina Cecunjanin tied the game in the 25th minute, and Martinez made it 2-1 just before halftime.
Martinez put it away in the 54th minute, notching her second of the night and third goal in the past two games overall.
Al Unaitis and Alina Cecunjanin had assists for Pioneer, which improved to 1-4-1 on the season.
“We brought intensity and played incredibly smart,” Pullen lauded.
Leah Fuess made 12 saves in net to pick up the win for Pioneer. Athol’s Haley Wrigley recorded 13 saves.
Pioneer looks to keep the momentum going Friday with an away game at Mount Everett. Athol hosts Hopkins Academy Thursday night.
Hopkins 3, Greenfield 0 — Samantha Jenks scored twice in the second half and Hopkins Academy pulled away from Greenfield for a 3-0 independent girls’ victory Monday evening at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.
A.J. Mitchell scored the only goal of the first half on an assist from Izzy Palmisano in the 24th minute and the game remained that way until Jenks scored an unassisted goal midway through the second half. Jenks then scored with 15 minutes to play on an assist from Mary Kate Fortin.
After beginning the season with four wins in their first five games, Greenfield has now dropped two games in a row.
“We need to start taking it one game at a time,” Greenfield coach Tina Riddell said.
Hopkins outshot the Green Wave, 24-11, in the win.
Dina Samake made 15 saves in the loss.
Frontier 5, Smith Voke 1 — Natalie Denkiewicz scored five times on Monday afternoon as Frontier defeated Smith Voke, 5-1, in an independent girls’ game at Herlihy Field in Whately.
Denkiewicz notched a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the game — the first assisted by Jenna Martin, the second by Cambrie Hamilton — as Frontier took advantage of Smith Voke playing a high line to try and pull the Red Hawks offsides. Martin sprung the speedy Denkiewicz for a breakaway on the first goal, while Hamilton hit Denkiewicz with a pass on the second goal in which Denkiewicz made a move at the top of the 18 and lifted the ball over Gateway goalie Lizzy Hardy’s head.
Smith Voke got one goal back off the foot of Carly Petlock in the 25th minute as the Red Hawks (5-3-0) held a 2-1 lead at the break. It was all Frontier after the break, as Martin, Hamilton and Victoria Speth each sprung Denkiewicz for a breakaway goal to put the game away.
Siomara Green and Amalie Joyce-Sullivan each played a half in the Frontier net and each goalie stopped three shots. Hardy finished with six saves in the loss.
Mahar 6, McCann Tech 0 — Sarah Graeff came through with her first two goals of the season, helping Mahar break through for a 6-0 victory over McCann Tech in an independent girls soccer game Monday in North Adams.
“We came out flat today and if we do it again it will cost us,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said. “Sarah Graeff gave us a big spark today as did Sienna Moore. I know if we come out like this again (today against) Amherst it will be a different story so hopefully we learn from it.”
Mahar got on the board early in the first half with a goal from Delaney Parker, her Recorder area-leading 22nd tally of the season. Graeff scored with 14:13 left before halftime, as the Senators held a 2-0 edge at intermission.
Graeff made it 3-0 just four minutes into the second half, before Emma Savoy, Lani DeDiego and Moore found the back of the net to help the Senators pull away. Tori Tenney had two assists while Moore also had an assist.
Mahar hosts Amherst today at 4.
Gateway 9, Mohawk 0 — Erin Harris recorded a hat trick and added two assists to lead Gateway past Mohawk, 9-0, Monday in Huntington.
Amalie Rowehl made nine saves in the loss.
