The Country Club of Greenfield continues its home course dominance over the weekend.
The club improved to 11-7-1 all-time in the Franklin Cup, remaining undefeated on home turf with a convincing 16-8 victory over Crumpin-Fox Club in the 19th annual Ryder Cup-style event played in Greenfield.
Leading 8½-3½ entering Sunday’s singles action, CCG sealed the deal with six victories and three halves. Garrett Cousineau started things with a 2 & 1 win over CFC’s Tim Rice, while Will Conant beat Rich Carroll, 5 & 3. Jason Kelton (2-Up), Mark Kennedy (1-Up), Dave Kennedy (6 & 4) and Terry Blanchard (5 & 4) also won singles matches for the winners.
Justin Dion was a 6 & 4 winner for CFC on Sunday against Brett Sirum, while Tim Brandl (6 & 5) and Erik Barnes (3 & 2) also captured singles victories for the visiting club.
Dave Kennedy continued his dominance in the Franklin Cup, as he went 3-0 to up his career record to 28-17-6. Kennedy, the CCG captain, teamed with Kelton, who also went 3-0 over the weekend, to pick up a Four-Ball win over CFC’s Dave Donoghue and Erik Barnes (2 & 1) on Saturday. In the afternoon alternate shot foursome matches, Kennedy and Kelton were 4 & 2 winners over Dion and Mark Waskiewicz.
CCG’s Nate Burdick and Chris Bourbeau teamed to go 2-0 on Saturday, and both players halved their singles matches on Sunday to finish 2-0-1. Burdick and Bourbeau were 1-Up winners over CFC’s Carroll and Rice in Saturday Four-Ball action, while adding a dominant 6 & 4 win over Doug Taylor and Jordan Haskell in the afternoon Foursomes.
Crumpin-Fox was led by Brandl and Chris Stoddard, as the two players were the only members of their team to score more than one point. Brandl’s single win over Jamie Crocker of CCG paired with a halve of his Four-Ball match on Saturday with partner Haskell. The duo won a half-point against Will Conant and Sirum. Stoddard teamed with Taylor to snag a 1-Up victory in the first match out on Saturday in Four-Ball action over Mark Kennedy and Blanchard, and he added a half-point in his Foursome match with partner Carroll against CCG’s Conant and Sirum.
Next year’s 20th edition of the Franklin Cup heads back to Crumpin-Fox Club.
CFC Scramble
Michael Mertes and Jack Neves teamed for a convincing victory, posting a total of 11-under to win the Crumpin-Fox Club’s Open Two-Player Scramble on Saturday in Bernardston.
Two teams, Jay Corbett and Chris Chappelle along with Paul Nothe and Kevin St. Laurent, tied for second place at 6-under.
GHS Hockey Outing
Joe Geyster, Zac Geyster, Patrick Davis and Mark Cunningham shot a 56 to win low gross during the GHS Hockey Outing Friday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Tim Farrell, Pat McGuire, Casey Fahey and Scott Cote came in second with a 59.
Steve Carr, Joe Cruello, Jim Elwell and Wayne Borkowski won low net with a 52, and Joe Geyster, Paul Mallett, Chris Gauthier and Bryan Melanson were second with a 55.
Paul French, Kim French, Matt Bete and Dawn Bete tied Linda Bouchard, Jerry Bouchard, Benny Perra and Jenia Perra for first place in the Mixed Division with a 67.
F.C. Bulldogs
Davian Bala rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Franklin County Bulldogs defeat Quabbin, 22-0, in a Suburban League PeeWee Division football game Sunday at Turners Falls High School.
Gavin Arsenault scored a pair of two-point conversions to aid the cause.
On defense, Jonathan Ainsworth recorded eight tackles to pace the Bulldogs. Jaiden Hurd had seven tackles, while D’Angelo Brown added six tackles. Arsenault and Dustin Reade added four tackles each, while Bala, Ethan Burgh and Owen Hill all had three tackles. Julian James and Brayden Slauenwhite each had two tackles in the win.
Pioneer beats Westfield
Behind a 17-hit attack, Pioneer Stone Seals cruised to a 16-5 win over Westfield No. 2 in a High School Fall Baseball League game Sunday at Jachym Field in Westfield.
Cayden Lehtomaki paced the offensive explosion with a triple, two singles and five RBIs. Josh Brunelle added two hits, including a double, to go with two RBIs, while Dalton Henderson drove in two runs and scored four times to go with a pair of singles. David Carey (two singles, two RBIs), Jason Quinn (two singles), Nate Sciandra (single, RBI) and Hugh Cyhowski (single, RBI) all made key contributions offensively. Jacob Quinn, Robby Kenyon, James Robison and Chris Miner had a single each.
Pioneer improved to 7-0 on the fall.
F.C. Green wins
Jack Vecellio was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Franklin County Green picked up a 4-2 win over Westfield Red in a Babe Ruth Fall Baseball League game Saturday at Jachym Field in Westfield.
Gillis MacDougall was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Alex Gochinski (single, run) and Miles Ferreira (run) each came across.
Westfield’s pitching combined for 15 strikeouts, and the team’s offense loaded the bases before Vecellio nailed down the save in relief of Ferreira. MacDougall also pitched three innings to aid the cause, as Westfield was limited to just four hits.
Franklin County Red held off a 7th inning base loaded challenge by Westfield to improve to 3-4 on the year. Newer pitchers Jack Vecellio (save) and Miles Ferreira (win) teamed up with stalwart Gillis MacDougall to limit Westfield to 2 runs on 4 hits to win the game despite strong pitching from Westfield that combined for 15 K’s.
Aidan Heffernan helped turn a double play in the field at second base, while third basemen Joey White and Gochinski played well defensively.
F.C. Babe Ruth meeting
The Franklin County Babe Ruth League will hold a general meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at St. Kazimierz Society in Turners Falls.
Topics include a status report on the two fall baseball teams, board positions that will be opening for the 2019 season, fundraising as it relates to the current can and bottle drive, as well as new business. Valley Storm wins
Chloe Vogel and Courtney Dunham combined to pick up the win in the pitching circle, leading the Valley Storm 16U softball team to a 4-3 win over Westfield Batter’s Box Sunday at Nonotuck Park in Easthampton.
Julia Gauvin singled and drove in two runs for the Storm. Heather Catlin had a triple and drove in the other two runs, while Emily Labonte and Megan Healy added singles.
12s beat Rutland
MacKenzie Paulin was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, and Ashley Taylor added two hits, including a triple, to help the Valley Storm 12U team double up Rutland, 12-6, on Sunday.
Sophia Pinardi had the other hit for the Storm, while Lucia Doulette, Sofia Holden, Kylee Gamache, Amelia Pierce and Skylei LaPan all scored runs.
Paulin, Holdena nd Taylor combined to strike out 14 batters in five innings of work, as the Storm scored five times in both the second and third innings.
FCHA Midgets split
Jacob Bryant scored his team’s lone goal Sunday, as Franklin County Hockey Association dropped an 8-1 decision to Holy Name Black in a Midget level youth hockey game that saw FCHA fall to 2-1-1 overall on the season.
Kyle Barnes and Adam Savoy assisted on Bryant’s goal.
The team picked up an 8-2 win to open its weekend over Worcester, with Barnes scoring three goals to go with two assists and Mike McGoldrick also burying a trio of goals to pair with an assist.
Savoy tallied and assisted on two other goals, while Jacob Croteau had his team’s other goal. Porter Clancy and Bryant added assists.
Deerfield Academy results
Donnie Gray ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown, helping Deerfield Academy capture a 13-7 victory over Hotchkiss in a NEPSAC varsity football game Saturday in Lakeville, Conn.
Quinton Quirrenbach hauled in a 5-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter for the other Big Green touchdown.
The squad improved to 2-1 on the season, and they’ll host Worcester Academy on Saturday.
• Elsewhere, the field hockey team remained undefeated with a 4-1 win over Exeter.
The Big Green improved to 5-0.
• In other action, the girls cross country team captured first place at the Westminster Invitational while the boys team took second.
The boys soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Kent and the girls soccer team was blanked by Pomfret, 2-0.
The boys water polo team was edged by St. John’s Prep, 9-6.
Chasen Mason 5K
The 10th annual Chasen A Mason 5K Road Race will take place on Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Turners Falls.
Registration is currently taking place at runreg.com, and race day registration begins at 8 a.m.
