Joey Mosca swept four points at No. 2, earning medalist honors with a low round of 46 to lift Turners Falls High School to a 15-9 victory over Mohawk in an independent golf match played Wednesday afternoon at Edge Hill Golf Course in Ashfield.
Brody Booska shot 52 at No. 1 for Turners (4-2 overall), earning 1½ points in his match, while Aidan Bailey scored four points at No. 5 for the Thunder behind a round of 59.
Mohawk (4-4) was led by Andy Robertson in the No. 3 hole, where he shot a team-low round of 49 and scored four points toward the team total. Will Guyette won 2½ points at No. 1 thanks to a round of 52, while Ben Thompson’s 55 at No. 4 was also worth 2½ points for the Warriors.
Turners hosts Easthampton today while Mohawk heads to play at Central.
Greenfield 13, Smith Academy 11 — Ryan Cote shot 40 at No. 1 and Jake Cote carded a 44 in the No. 4 spot, helping Greenfield stay hot with a 13-11 win over Smith Academy in a Bi-County East match Wednesday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Jake Cote scored three points in his match against Colin Ferrara, while Ryan Cote scored 1½ points against Smith’s Dan Cavanaugh, who was the match medalist with a 39.
The bottom of the lineup won 7½ out of 8 points in the Nos. 5 and 6 spots for Greenfield (5-1, 5-1). Cam Baird shot 49 at No. 5, while Dylan Archer also carded a 49 at No. 6 to help the Green Wave edge the Falcons (1-4, 1-4).
Gabe Larouche shot 50 at No. 2 while Danny Provost added a 53 in the No. 3 spot.
Greenfield travels to play at Monson today.
Southwick 22½, Mahar 1½ — Andrew Finch scored the lone points of the afternoon for Mahar, registering 1½ in his match at No. 2 as Mahar dropped a 22½-1½ independent contest to Southwick Wednesday.
Finch shot 59 for the Senators (0-8). Tucker Ninteau had the low round of the day for Mahar at No. 1, where he posted a 46. Jacob Bowers shot 68 at No. 3.
Southwick’s Matthew Garrity was the medalist with a round of 40.
Greenfield 5, Agawam 1 — Three more goals from Raegan Hickey propelled Greenfield to an impressive road victory Wednesday night. The Green Wave stormed out to a 3-0 halftime lead and knocked off Agawam, 5-1, in an independent field hockey game.
Hickey tallied three times and added an assist, while Racquel Provost and Katie Haselton had the other goals for Greenfield (7-0). Haselton, Mady Kuchieski and Olivia Joy all notched assists, as Greenfield held a 13-3 edge in corners and a 10-6 advantage in shots.
“Defensively, we played pretty well tonight and made some good decisions,” Greenfield coach Erin Thayer said. “Nikki Miner had a great game defensively. We put her on one of their top players and she stopped her quite a few times.”
Samantha Smith had five saves in net for the Wave, which return home to play Northampton Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Minnechaug 2, Frontier 0 — As far as difficult weeks go, this one has been right up there for the Frontier field hockey team.
For the second time in three days, the Red Hawks played one of the top teams in Division 1. Wednesday’s performance was much more encouraging for head coach Missy Mahar compared to a 6-0 loss to Longmeadow on Monday, as visiting Frontier was right in the game before Minnechaug tallied twice in the second half en route to a 2-0 independent victory in Wilbraham.
“I think we had a better performance today,” Mahar said of Wednesday’s defeat. “We adjusted to their pace and we hung in there. We need to start capitalizing on our offensive chances better though.”
Karalyn Jones and Melanie Ward scored for the Falcons (5-0), while goalkeeper Maggie Petruzzelli made four saves to earn the shutout.
Frontier keeper Skyla Burniske turned away 11 shots. Minnechaug held a 10-6 edge in corners.
The Hawks (4-2-2) look to get back on the winning side of things Friday with a home game against West Springfield.
Mahar 3, FC Tech 0 — A tight second set saw host Franklin County Technical School nearly even the match, but visiting Mahar managed to hang on and eventually finished off a sweep of the Eagles, 25-16, 29-27, 25-20, in an independent girls volleyball match Wednesday night in Turners Falls.
“The second game, I told the girls that was the best they’ve played all season,” Franklin Tech coach Jade Cuevas said. “It was very promising to see them put things together.”
Hailie Meeker had 6 kills and Jordyn Berry added 6 aces for the Senators (5-3). Aria Flematti registered 18 assists and Lauren Henne notched 13 digs.
Summer Gadreau paced Franklin Tech (0-10) with 6 kills and 5 digs to go with an ace, while Emily Ryan had 2 kills and 3 blocks and Renee Reed had an ace, two kills, two assists, two digs and a block.
Lenox 3, Turners 0 — Despite 5 kills and 3 aces from Taylor Murphy, visiting Turners Falls was unable to keep pace with Lenox Memorial High School in a 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 independent loss Wednesday night in the Berkshires.
Dabney Rollins added 4 kills and 3 aces for the Thunder (6-3), which return to action Friday against East Longmeadow.
Easthampton 3, Greenfield 0 — Christine Daybek put down 8 kills and host Easthampton swept Greenfield, 25-21, 25-10, 25-15 in an independent volleyball match Wednesday night.
Autumn Pinard had 16 assists for the Eagles, which improved to 3-3 overall.
No Greenfield information was provided. The Green Wave fell to 1-6 with the loss, and they are off until Monday night against Belchertown.
