After a strong start to the season, the Turners Falls High School girls volleyball team ran into some adversity on Wednesday.

The Thunder fell behind to Chicopee early and was never able to recover, succombing, 25-15, 25-10, 26-24, in an independent match in Turners Falls.

“We need to learn to overcome adversity and fight when we are down,” Turners Falls coach Kelly Liimatainen said. “We can’t just crumble. We need to not be pointing fingers when things get difficult, we need to come together.”

Hailey Bogusz finished with five assists and one ace for the Thunder (5-1), while Dabney Rollins had two kills and one block. Kenzie Martell chipped in seven digs, and Lindsay Whiteman added six digs.

Turners has another tough test Friday when Lee comes to town.

Belchertown 3, Athol 0 — Abby Roberts finished with four kills and three digs on Wednesday but Athol dropped a 25-14, 25-22, 25-21 decision to Belchertown in an independent match in Athol.

Alexis Carrasquillo had four kills and three aces for the Red Raiders (0-6), and Lexi Fort chipped in seven assists, seven digs and three aces.

Easthampton 3, Mahar 1 — Jordyn Berry finished with seven kills, two aces and one dig on Wednesday but Mahar fell to Easthampton 25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 25-12 in independent play at Grzesik-Bixby Gym in Orange.

Ava Santana had four kills, four digs and one ace for the Senators (3-3), and Aria Flematti had three kills, four aces, eight assists and two digs. Lauren Henne had six digs, Carissa Johnson had four aces and two digs, and Ava Liberty finished with three aces.

Holyoke 3, FC Tech 0 — Renee Reed finished with three aces, one kill and one dig for Franklin Tech on Wednesday but the Eagles fell to Holyoke 25-13, 25-15, 25-13 in an independent match in Turners Falls.

Kelly Trudeau had two aces and two digs for the Eagles (0-7), and Kim Petrovic had two kills and two digs.

South Hadley 3, Mohawk 0 — Ashley Reynolds had six digs, one kill, one ace and three assists but Mohawk suffered a 25-18, 25-13, 25-19 loss to South Hadley in an independent contest Wednesday in Buckland.

Julia Massey had three kills, three digs and two aces in the loss. Kayla Martin finished with five digs and five aces, and Elly Patnode finished with three digs and four aces.

Sabis 0 Greenfield 0 — Tyleisia Cooper had three aces and seven kills to pace Sabis past Greenfield, 26-24, 25-8, 25-17 in an independent match Wednesday in Greenfield.

Hannah Mailloux finished with four aces for Greenfield. Zahri Smith added two aces, and Caitlyn Moore finished wth seven digs.

Golf

Greenfield 20, St. Mary’s 4 — Hunter Roberts shot a 39 and swept four points at No. 3 as Greenfield topped St. Mary’s, 20-4, in a Bi-County East golf match Wednesday at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Ryan Cote matched Roberts for the Wave’s low score with a 39 at No. 1 and took one point. Luke Willenborg was the match medalist with a 37 at No. 1 for St. Mary’s and took three points. Danny Provost shot a 43 at No. 5 and took four points, and Dylan Archer shot a 44 and swept four points at No. 6. Gabe Larouche shot a 45 at No. 2 and took three points for the Green Wave (3-1-0), and Cam Baird shot a 48 and took four points at No. 4.

Hampshire 23, Mahar 1 — Levi Zielinski carded a 38 and took four points at No. 2 to lead Hampshire past Mahar, 23-1, in a Suburban West golf match Wednesday at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol.

Tucker Ninteau shot a 47 and took the lone point for Mahar.

Greenfield 18, Smith Voke 45 — Tyssen LaBombard finished fourth overall as Greenfield won three meets Wednesday at the Hadley Reservoir.

LaBombard crossed the line in 17 minutes, 8 seconds to pace the Wave, and teammate Andy Bostrom was fifth overall in 17:19. Dylan Badillo was ninth overall for the Wave in 18:06.

McCann 23, Pioneer 36 

Hampden Charter 25, Pioineer 32

Pope Francis 15, Pioneer 50 — Noah de Ruiter finished ninth overall for Pioneer on Wednesday but the Panthers dropped three boys cross country meets in Northfield.

Bryce Ordonez won the 2.79-mile race in 16:54 as Pope Francis had the first six runners cross the finish line on the day. Pioneer was led by de Ruiter, who crossed the line in 20:13.

Girls’ cross country

Greenfield 18, Palmer 38

Greenfield 15, Smith Voke 45 — Greenfield had the first four runners across the finish line to win a pair of girls cross country meets Wednesday at the Hadley Reservoir.

Louisa Carme won the race in 20:59, and teammate Kandace Lu was second in 22:44. Candace Subeldia was third in 22:55, and Johanna Guiod was fourth in 23:12. Morghan Blanchard finished eighth overall for the Wave in 25:05, and Ashlee Bowen was 10th in 27:25.
