TURNERS FALLS — The Fifth Street Bridge, also known as the Green Bridge, which spans the power canal, was slated to be closed for repairs on Monday when the canal was drained, but the bridge has remained open.
Highway Superintendent Tom Bergeron had told town officials the bridge would be closed while repairs were made to the underside of the bridge and would remain closed until materials were available to repair the decking.
But workers on site Tuesday were able to attach plates to the underside of the bridge to catch debris from the decking repair so they won’t have to close the bridge to traffic. With the plates in place, the canal can be re-filled and the bridge will be open until materials arrive to fix the decking.
