In what projects to be a matchup of two of the top teams in the Pioneer North Division, Delaney Parker scored a goal and added an assist to lead Mahar Regional School to a 2-0 victory over Frontier in a girls’ soccer match Friday afternoon in South Deerfield.
In a hard fought match, Parker combined with a goal from Mollie Burke that helped the Senators gain the early-season victory.
“It’s always a challenge going up against Mahar,” said Frontier coach Phil Pittelli. “They did a great job on defense, and Delaney Parker is a tough player to play against. She is really fast and was hard for us to deal with, tonight. Overall, both teams played well and it was a very evenly matched game”
Burke put the Senators on the board in the 29th minute on a pass from Parker to give Mahar a 1-0 halftime lead. Parker then tallied her goal in the 53rd minute on a pass from Lani DeDiego to give Mahar the 2-0 final.
Marie Nottleson stopped 6 shots in net to earn the victory while Amalie Sullivan-Joyce turned away two shots in net for the Red Hawks.
Greenfield 2, Smith Academy 1 — Victoria Marin scored two first-half goals as Greenfield High School girls’ soccer earned its first win in three seasons as the Green Wave downed Smith Academy 2-1 in a Pioneer South League soccer match Friday afternoon in Greenfield.
Marin opened up the scoring in the third minute taking a long pass from Eva Pruitt-Dahl and driving the ball into the box before firing a shot past Smith Academy goalkeeper Madelyn Bell for the 1-0 lead. Marin doubled the score 17 minutes later on a second assist from Pruitt-Dahl boosting the Green Wave to a 2-0 halftime lead.
From there Greenfield survived a second half goal from Smith Academy forward Story Goldman to earn its first victory.
“The girls were very excited and I was nearly deaf at the end of the game,” said first-year Greenfield coach Tina Riddell. “We celebrated like it was a playoff win. I am really proud of the girls, they are improving each and every day and we are making progress on both offense and defense.”
Dina Samake earned the win in net for Greenfield turning away 13 shots, while Bell blocked seven for Smith Academy.
Greenfield looks for its second win of the season Tuesday when it travels to face Pioneer in Northfield at 6.
Athol 2, Pope Francis 1 — Grace Dufour netted two first-half goals to lead Athol to a 2-1 win over Pope Francis in a Pioneer North girls soccer match Friday afternoon in Athol.
Shelby Mailloux tallied an assist to help the Red Raiders improve to 1-1 on the young season. Haley Wrigley turned away 5 shots in net for Athol to earn the victory.
Ware 3, Pioneer 0 — Maraide McClure netted a goal and tallied an assist as Ware defeated Pioneer, 3-0, in a Pioneer South girls soccer match Friday afternoon in Northfield.
Caitlyn Hess and Andrea Bell each scored for Ware in support of goalkeeper Abby Hayman who blocked five shots in net.
Leah Fuess played well in net for Pioneer turning away 22 shots for the Panthers.
FC Tech 2, Westfield Tech 0 — Brooke Adams buried a goal in each half, and host Franklin Tech got off to a winning start with a 2-0 shutout of Westfield Tech Friday in a Tri-County League soccer contest in Turners Falls.
“Every single girl contributed at some point in the game but we came out aggressive and worked together,” Franklin Tech coach Dan Prasol offered.
Odalis Ramirez-Martin assisted on the second-half goal for the Eagles (1-0, 1-0), which received six saves in net from Emily Merritt to secure the shutout.
Drury 7, Mohawk 0 — Kayla McGrath scored four goals and Elli Miles added two as Drury cruised to a 7-0 win over Mohawk in an independent girls’ soccer match Friday afternoon in Buckland.
Amelie Rowehl stopped 11 shots in net for the Warriors while Lillian Van Vleet substituted in and turned away 2 shots.
Westfield Tech 6, FC Tech 3 — Philip Lisyanyy scored two goals to help Westfield Technical Academy earn a 6-3 victory of Franklin County Technical School in an independent boys’ soccer match Friday afternoon in Westfield.
Westfield Tech scored two goals from the penalty spot and a goal off of a deflection on a clearance that ended up in the back of the Eagles net.
Ryan Campbell scored twice for the Eagles while Jovanni Ruggiano notched a goal of his own in support of Grayson Funk who turned away 5 shots in net.
Greenfield 5, South Hadley 1 — Olivia Joy and Raegan Hickey each had two goals as Greenfield High School opened up its season with a 5-1 victory over South Hadley High School in a Valley League field hockey match Friday afternoon in Greenfield.
Audrey Bresciano also registered a score for the Green Wave in support of Samantha Smith who turned away 8 shots in net.
“I thought it was a good start for us,” said Green Wave head coach Erin Thayer. “We did some things very well and we have things to improve upon but overall it was a good start.”
Greenfield returns to action Monday night at home against East Longmeadow High School.
Frontier 2, Smith Academy 0 — Lily Spencer and Olivia Vecellio each had a goal as Frontier Regional School opened the season with a 2-0 win over Smith Academy in a Valley League field hockey match Friday afternoon in South Deerfield.
Spencer opened up the scoring for the Red Hawks in the first half, taking a pass from Alyson Barnes and firing it past Smith Academy goalie Taeghan Cavanaugh for the early 1-0 lead. Vecellio sealed the victory with a second half goal after early a penalty stroke. The Red Hawks played well on offense generating 19 shots while preventing Smith Academy from registering a shot of their own.
Turners 2, Mohawk 1 — Amber Taylor and Jade Tyler each registered goals to lead Turners Falls High Schools to a 2-1 win over Mohawk Trail Regional High School in a Bi-County League field hockey match Friday afternoon in Buckland.
Cassidhe Wozniak and Brynn Tela each recorded assists for Turners Falls in support of goalie Hayley Greene who stopped 3 shots to earn the win.
Sarah Herzig scored the lone goal for Mohawk with an assist from Catilin Johnston.
Holyoke 2, Mahar 1 — Lilly Fellows got the scoring started eight minutes into regulation, but host Holyoke buried its only two shot attempts of the night to capture a 2-1 victory over Mahar in a Bi-County League field hockey game Friday at the Roberts Field Complex in Holyoke.
Abby Henne assisted on Fellows’ goal, which gave the Senators (1-1, 0-1) a quick 1-0 advantage. Holyoke tied it late in the first half and notched the game-winner with 12:14 remaining in the second half. The Purple Knights finished with just two shots on goal, cashing in on both opportunities. Mahar held an 11-2 advantage in the shots department, and had a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.
Athol 4, FC Tech 0 — Christa Cucchi scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead Athol to a 4-0 win over Franklin County Technical School in a Tri-County League field hockey match Friday in Turners Falls.
Ashley Rouleau, Reily Polana and Samantha Kennis each had goals for the Red Raiders in support winning goalie Ryley Pond (2 saves).
Kylee Baleno played well in goal for the Eagles turning away 12 shots.
Frontier 3, Westfield 1 — Lauren Davenport belted 19 kills to help Frontier Regional School earn a 25-13, 25-16, 17-25, 25-21 win over Westfield High School in an independent girls’ volleyball match Friday night in South Deerfield.
Olivia Deane and Ashley Telega each had 10 kills for the Red Hawks while Elizabeth Fuqua registered 40 assists.
Frontier 18, Hampshire 6 — Seventh Grader, Gunnar Moore fired a 38 to earn match medalist honors as Frontier Regional School rolled to an 18-6 win over Hampshire Regional High School in a Suburban West Division golf match Friday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Gunnar along with Kyle Maynard (39), Kalen Evans (46) and Rowan Blair (43) each took 4 points for the Red Hawks.
Greenfield 18½, Smith Academy 5½ — Cam Baird and Jake Cote each took 4 points to help Greenfield High School earn a 18 ½ – 5 ½ win over Smith Academy in a Bi-County East Division golf match Friday afternoon at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Ryan Cote was co-match medalist with his opponent Dan Cavanaugh as each player shot 46 and took 2 points.
