In the race for state representative in the 1st Franklin District, experience working in public service is critical. I want a state representative who has had to build coalitions to solve complex issues. I want a state representative with experience listening to all sides and finding compromise. I want a state representative who has had to make tough decisions and is comfortable with differences of opinion.

As a Whately Selectboard member for the past 14 years, Jonathan Edwards has dealt with issues and situations that no other candidate can claim. I have witnessed firsthand his ability to be a community and government leader not just for Whately. His patience with discussions around the local public schools is commendable and I remember his willingness to discuss issues until everyone was heard and consensus could be found.

He masterfully built a coalition across different towns and points of view in the formation of the South County Emergency Management Service. The consistent theme is that Edwards is always at the table, working hard to solve important issues facing our communities. Most recently, Edwards chaired the Whately Selectboard during the exceptionally confrontational issue of the future of Castaway and adult entertainment.

His ability to remain calm, listen to all sides and demand that everyone treat each other with respect is what makes him a great public servant. Nobody else in this race has that direct, local leadership experience. The ability to listen, compromise and find the best solution possible is what I want in my next state representative. Tackling tough issues and facing public criticism are experiences that we must have in our next state representative. Jonathan Edwards is the only candidate with these experiences.

I urge you to join me in voting for Edwards on Sept 4.
