Just days away from Sept. 1, residents throughout Franklin County are reminded summer isn’t over yet. Excessive heat advisories have been issued for now through 9 p.m. Wednesday.
According to Accuweather, heat index values can be up to 102 degrees with temperatures in the 90s, and dewpoints in the 70s — meaning the heat will be accompanied by high levels of humidity.
Over the next couple days, people are recommended to drink lots of fluids, stay in air conditioned rooms and stay out of sunshine, according to Accuweather.
Captain Kyle Cogswell of the Turners Falls Fire Department said they have responded to many medical calls due to heat this summer, with EMS staff trying to inform people on ways to stay safe during heat advisories. He said it is important to keep a balance.
“We tell people to have a good amount of hydration in the form of water, eating three healthy meals a day, but trying to avoid overeating,” Cogswell said. “We tell people to use an ice pack under their arm pits or on the back of the neck, but don’t take an ice bath because that can lower your body temperatures too quickly, which can have severe complications as well.”
Other recommendations during hot days include planning strenuous activities early in the day, wearing light, loose fitting clothing and taking frequent breaks from any outside work, according to Accuweather.
Cogswell added that if someone is questioning whether or not to seek medical attention, don’t hesitate to call 911.
“If you start to feel sick or aren’t sure, reach out. Call 911. We are here to help and provide medical treatment,” Cogswell said.
