One day after falling in the championship of the 73rd Invitational Four-Ball, Cody Booska was back at it on Monday.
The Turners Falls native carded an even-par 72, putting him in a tie for 13th place after Day 1 of the 37th Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship at The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick.
Booska is just two shots behind the leaders, as a pack of six golfers shot 2-under 68 in Monday’s first of two rounds. He was 1-under at the turn and got it to 2-under with a birdie on No. 10. A bogey on 13 and a double-bogey on 16 put him at 1-over before he closed things out with a birdie on the par 3 17th to finish with an even-par 72.
The field was cut to the low 60 scorers and ties for today’s Round 2, and three other local golfers made the cut after Monday’s opening round. Crumpin-Fox Club’s Nathan Patterson used an eagle on the 16th hole to help post a 4-over 76, putting him in a tie for 30th place and just six shots back of the lead.
South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek had two birdies on his card and shot 5-over 77 to put him in a tie for 36th place.
CFC’s Mark Waskiewicz reached Day 2 after posting a 7-over 79, making the cut right on the number as he sits in a tie for 56th position.
Booska tees off his second round this morning at 8:40 a.m., while Patterson (7:50 a.m.), Zaranek (9 a.m.) and Waskiewicz (8 a.m.) all aim to go low when they get their second and final rounds underway today back at The Ranch.
Mass Women’s Am
A pair of Crumpin-Fox Club golfers competed in the 115th Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship on Monday.
Meg Watson and Kelly Dolan tied for 48th place, as the pair each shot 19-over rounds of 91 at the four-day event held at George Wright Golf Course in Boston.
Watson is having a strong summer on the links, as she won a Mass Golf Championship event at Bass River Golf Course in June — her first tournament victory.
Shannon Johnson of Thorny Lea Golf Club was the lone player in Monday’s field to score in red figures, as she leads the field after a 1-under 71.
The tournament continues today with match play action as the top 32 players advanced while the rest of the field that shot below a 86 was cut.
Mark K. Memorial
The team of Bob Walker, Norm Cousineau, Ron Bovat and Doug Field shot a winning score of 55 to top the field at Monday’s Mark K. Memorial Mixed Golf League at Oak Ridge Golf Club in Gill.
Don Roy, Bob Zaikowski, Glen Rathburn, Linda Bovat and Don Healy won a match of cards to finish second with a 57.
In the course’s club championship over the weekend, Brian Smith took the low gross while Rathburn was the low net winner on the men’s side.
In women’s action, Janet Small had the low gross and Patti Lane nabbed the low net.
Ashfield Ladies League
Barb Ladd and Katie Benedetti shot 37 to take first place in the best-ball format at Monday’s 5 o’clock Ladies League at the Ashfield Community Golf Course.
Francie Hall and Diane O’Connell were next with a 38.
Greenfield Co-Rec
Luis Melendez was 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs, and Beck’s Automotive defeated Smitty’s Pub, 23-18, in Greenfield Co-Rec Adult Softball League action Monday night at Green River Field.
Sunny Lucas was 4-for-6 with a double, triple and four RBIs in the win for Beck’s. Jessica Bartlett had two doubles and three RBIs as part of a three hit evening, while Jeff Guy added a three-run home run.
Smitty’s was powered by a 5-for-5 night from Alan Mailloux. Johnny Ollari and Mitch Mailloux had three hits apiece.
ISI Worlds
Several locals from the New England West Skating Club excelled at the 2018 ISI World Recreational Team Championships last week, with skaters from across the U.S. and the world competing at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.
Amelia Bouchard of Greenfield competed in four events, bringing home three bronze medals and a fifth-place finish.
Sunderland’s Maria Santore competed in two events, scoring a gold and a bronze medal, while fellow Sunderland resident Giorgia Santore won a gold and added fourth and fifth place finishes in four events.
Maggie Provencal of Colrain competed in three eventsm finishing with a silver, bronze and fourth-place finish.
Coaches Suzanne McCaughtry and Stacy Chickering attended the event with their students.
Basketball
DRIVE Men’s League
Steve Cooley scored 24 points and Evan Bruson added 18 to help Bruso Computer Solution to a 71-66 win over Sandri in a DRIVE Men’s League basketball game Thursday.
Taylor Armstrong was the high-scorer for Sandri with 22 points.
• Elsewhere, Matt Gibson scored 26 points and Lew Borden tossed in 14 as the Woo Crew captured an 86-57 win over Whitney Fence.
Tucker Llewelyn’s 23 points were tops for Whitney Fence. Brian Llewelyn added 16.
• In other action, Ian Fulton-Black tossed in a game-high 29 points to help VT Hoops to an 82-72 win over The Warriors.
Tory Buck led the way for The Warriors with 19 points.
WMass Warriors tryouts
Tryouts for the Western Mass. Warriors 18U travel softball team are set for Aug. 11 and 12.
The team will hold tryouts from 5-7 p.m. at Turners Falls High School.
