GREENFIELD — Antique garden tractors will line the Franklin County Fairgrounds this weekend, and will even compete in a contest to see which old tractor can pull the most weight.
The Retired Iron Tractor Show will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds at 87 Wisdom Way.
According to organizer Mike Scranton, entry and parking are free, but a donation of at least $5 is recommended, as all proceeds will benefit the Franklin County Agricultural Society, which manages the fairgrounds.
“It should be great fun for everyone and kids will have fun seeing it,” said Scranton, who said at least 60 antique tractors of varying ages and a food truck are expected at the show.
The “tractor weight drag” at 10 a.m. Saturday will be the highlight of the weekend, Scranton said.
Each antique tractor in the contest will drag a “boat” behind it and stones will be slowly added to the boat. Once a tractor can no longer move with the extra weight, it is eliminated, and the tractor that can pull the most weight in stone will win.
“It’s a friendly exhibition. There are no prizes,” Scranton said. “But it’s a good opportunity as a fundraiser for the fairgrounds.”
Scranton said vintage tractors are typically much larger than those used today, and it will be interesting to see tractors of different eras side-by-side this weekend.
Sunday is expected to be less lively, Scranton said, as many of the tractor owners will likely head to the tractor show in Pepperell, which has been an annual event for many years. However, people should still show up for a tractor ride at 10:30 a.m., Scranton said.
The Retired Iron Tractor Show is the first of its kind at the Franklin County Fairgrounds, and Scranton said it will likely continue if the event is successful.
People interested in vintage tractors and machinery often travel to outside of Franklin County to shows, Scranton said, but Franklin County, with its agricultural history, should be an ideal place for an antique tractor show.
“We’re just trying to gauge if there is enough interest,” Scranton said.
