Two days removed from playing in a state championship game, the stars of the Turners Falls High School softball team switched gears to the summer slate Monday night.
Taylor Murphy had three hits, including a triple, and drove in a run, while Juliana Rode and Olivia Whittier had two hits apiece to lift the Turners Falls Invaders to a 12-8 win over the Greenfield Grizzlies in a 14-and-under Suburban League contest at Vets Field in Greenfield.
Rode drove in three runs for Turners (1-0), while Whittier also had an RBI. Brooke Thayer started and finished the game in the circle, while Rode and Madison Liimatainen also saw time pitching.
Holding a slim 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh, the Invaders broke things open with a three-spot. Liimatainen got the rally started, driving in Olivia Safford with a hit, and the visitors pulled away for the 12-8 victory.
Greenfield’s Rachel Dodge was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Ainslee Flynn, Brie Widelo, Faith Smith and Caelyn Patenaude all added hits. Widelo and Kameryn Dearborn combined for 12 strikeouts in the pitching circle for the Grizzlies (0-2).
• In 12-and-under action, Brianna Storozuk and Holly Myers combined on a three-hitter to send Frontier Red to a 6-4 win over Frontier Blue at Merritt Field in Sunderland Monday night.
Ariana Miller had a hit and two RBIs for Frontier Red, while Ashley Taylor, Jessica Campbell and Cassidi Mushenski all had a hit and an RBI. Anna Dyjach smacked two hits, one of which was an RBI double.
Frontier Blue’s Molly Gates paced her team with two hits, and Delaney Fifield added a double.
• In other 12U action, Alysia Knapp was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, but the Greenfield Grizzlies dropped a 16-11 decision to Agawam at Murphy Park in Greenfield.
Kylee Gamache had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Grizzlies, who also received two hits and an RBI from Katie Trenholm. Anna Bucala and MacKenzie Paulin each had a hit and an RBI, while Margarette Howland (double), Kate Trudeau (single) and Sofia Holden (RBI) all contributed offensively.
Valley Storm 16U
It was a good weekend for the Valley Storm 16U softball team, as the club went 4-2 in the Brattleboro Summer Sizzler and finished second overall.
Leading the offensive charge for the Storm were Olivia Deane (three hits), Reagan Dupree (seven hits, five RBIs), Courtney Dunham (11 hits, home run, five RBIs), Heather Catlin (six hits, home run, six RBIs), Kelsey Richardson (five hits, RBI), Gianna Conte (six hits, two RBIs), Gabby Palmisano (four hits, three RBIs), Calista Lebron (four hits, triple, three RBIs), and Ally Markowski (two hits, triple, two RBIs).
Conte struck out 21 and walked three in a strong pitching performance over the weekend. Dunham also pitched well for the Storm.
NE-Am qualifier
Crumpin-Fox Club’s Ron Laverdiere shot a one-over par round of 73, tying him for eighth place and earning an invitation to next month’s New England Amateur Golf Championship at a qualifying event held Monday at Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton.
The New England Amateur Championship is scheduled for July 17-19 at Portland Country Club (Maine).
Laverdiere recorded five birdies in his round, finishing one shot clear of the cut at plus-2 to punch a ticket to the New England Am. Brett Krekorian of Indian Ridge Country Club shot 67 to finish atop the leaderboard at minus-5. Just three players finished under par on Monday.
South Deerfield’s Jonathan Elkins shot a 3-over 75, putting him just outside the cut. Elkins, who wound up in a three-way tie for 19th place at plus-3, could ultimately find his way into next month’s tournament as he earned one of three alternate spots in the event.
Mark K. Memorial
Steve Roy, Brian Prondecki, Laurie Davis and Don Healy won a match of cards to capture first place with a 62 at the Mark K. Memorial Mixed Golf League Monday night at Oak Ridge Golf Club in Gill.
Al Holmes, Scott Underwood, Ken Trask and Mike Keresey settled for second place while also shooting a 62.
CCG Monday Ladies
Tilly Clark finished first in the Patty Berg Flight, scoring a total of 26 as the Country Club of Greenfield’s Monday Night Ladies League played a game of odd holes score.
Sue O’Connor was second in the flight after totaling a 30.
The Nancy Lopez Flight was won by Jane Smith with a 27, followed by Margo Worden with a 29.
In the Annika Sörenstam Flight, Corky Sysun was first with a 29, followed closely by Linda Lively with a 30.
Ann Lyman won the Lorena Ochoa Flight with a score of 30, while Lynn Wiles was next with a 31.
Wanda Pyfrom shot 32 to take first in the Juli Inkster Flight, while Faith Griffiths was second at 33.
Rounding out the night was Susan Parker, who won the Paula Creamer Flight with a 36. Pam Poissant was right behind at 37.
Greenfield Tennis Cup
Brian Campbell outlasted Jesse Lucas in a tough second set to earn a 6-1, 7-5 victory in the men’s quarterfinal round of the Greenfield Tennis Cup Monday evening at the Beacon Field tennis courts.
Matt Howell picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gabe Seaver in another men’s quarterfinal match, while Kyle Maroni defeated Henry Hardy, 6-4, 6-3.
That sets up tonight’s semifinal round, where Howell will face Chris Seaver, who received a bye, and Campbell will meet Maroni at 5:30.
On the women’s side, a trio of players met in the first of a two-day round robin event Monday night.
Jenna Silk went 2-0 in her matches, earning a 6-4 win over Lilly Seaver and a 6-3 win over Emilia Seaver.
Lilly Seaver defeated her sister Emilia, 6-1, in the other match contested.
The women will play one more round robin round tonight.
Exhibition baseball game
The Naugatuck Hackers, a men’s baseball team from Conn., will play an exhibition baseball game with women baseball players from the New England area on Saturday at Herlihy Field in Whately.
Players from both teams will be mixed together, and divided into two squads. The women ball-players have all participated in the Red Sox Women’s Fantasy Camp in past years, while the Hackers are made up of men with high school varsity, collegiate, and even professional playing experience.
Behind home plate, calling balls and strikes, will be Perry Barber. Ms. Barber has arbitered at all levels of baseball, including the professional, independent Atlantic League, Mets’ spring training games, and the Red Sox Women’s Fantasy Camp. She is the recipient of the inaugural Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). This award recognizes Perry’s tireless advocacy for women in baseball. Barber also conducts umpiring clinics, has been a featured guest on the MLB Network, and is a board member for the International Women’s Baseball Center, and an advisor for Baseball for All.
DRIVE Men’s League
Robin Marchese poured in 25 points and Dan Donoghue added 22 to lift Donoghue Realty to a 78-72 win over Markol Strong in a DRIVE Men’s League basketball game on Sunday.
Markol Strong’s Brendin Woodard led his team with 21 points. Jalen Sanders added 17 in the loss.
• Elsewhere, Ben Johnson dropped 21 points in No Name’s 92-78 win over Money Boyz.
Moody Bey’s 21 points were tops for Money Boyz.
• Also, Angelo Thomas scored a league-high 35 points, and teammate Ben Barshefsky followed with 21 in Team DRIVE’s 84-62 victory over Whitney Fence.
Tucker Llewelyn and Brian Llewelyn combined for 28 points to power Whitney Fence.
• In other action, Kevin Mendez and Taylor Armstrong totaled 27 points as Sandri defeated The Warriors, 67-50.
Tory Buck’s 18 points led all scorers for The Warriors.
• Finally, Matt Gibson (23 points) and Lew Borden (18) helped send the Woo Crew to an 87-70 win over VT Hoops.
Luke Freed tallied 14 points for VT Hoops.
Montague Mug
The 38th annual Montague Mug Race will be held Aug. 19 at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common in Montague.
The race is 5½ miles and pewter mugs will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, while coffee mugs will be awarded to the top finishers in each division.
T-shirts will be given to the first 90 registrants.
The 2-mile Mini Mug race, now in its 14th year, will take place at 8:35.
