Gloucester’s Mark Turner fired a 1-under 71 to finish first and earn one of three qualifying spots as Crumpin-Fox Club held a U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship qualifying tournament Wednesday afternoon in Bernardston.

The 18-year old Turner was joined by Dover’s T. Andrew Dipetrillo (72) and Northampton’s Peter Bowie (72) as qualifiers for the U.S. Junior Amateur, set to be played July 16-21 at historic Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J. Bowie plays golf at Wilbraham & Monson Academy.

South Deerfield’s Jonathan Elkins shot 84 to pace the local contingent. Elkins, who attends The Taft School in Watertown, Conn., birdied the sixth and 15th holes but carded a 44 on the Front 9 before posting a 40 on the back.

Crumpin-Fox also held a Wednesday qualifying tournament for the U.S. Girls’ Junior Golf Championship. Lunenberg’s Emily Nash shot 2-over 74 to take first place and one of six spots in the event set for July 16-21 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Sarah Houle of Sandy Hook, Conn., was second in the field after carding a round of 77, while four golfers shot 78 to punch tickets to the Junior Championship next month.

Feeding Hills’ Angela Garvin, a top golfer at Agawam High School, was one shot off the pace and finished in a tie for seventh with a 7-over 79. Garvin, a rising senior, is committed to play collegiately at the University of Maryland.

Amateur baseball

Teddy Bear wins again

Big hits from Brad Bean and Liam Datres de la Blotier propelled Teddy Bear Pools to a 5-1 win over Wilbraham Funeral Home in a Tri-County League amateur baseball game Wednesday night at G.T. Valiton Field in South Deerfield.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Bean roped a two-run single to give Teddy Bear (5-3) a 2-1 advantage. Datres de la Blotier made it 4-1 with a two-run double in the third inning, and Julian Diamond drove in Datres de la Blotier with an RBI single to account for the 5-1 final.

Joe Larson earned the victory on the mound for the Poolmen, striking out five in 4⅔ innings of work. He allowed three hits and one run before giving way to Brandon Zaikowski, who struck out a pair in 2⅔ scoreless innings of relief.

Teddy Bear stays home Friday night for another TCL game against DiFranco Realty.

Adult softball

Greenfield Co-Rec

Jon Rosario was 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs and Beck’s Automotive defeated The Hangar Pub & Grille, 15-5, in a Greenfield Adult Co-Rec Softball League contest Wednesday night at Greenfield Middle School.

Sunny Lucas was 4-for-4 in the win, with teammates Jake Coburn (3-for-4, two doubles) and Jessica Bartlett (two hits, two RBIs) also contributing.

The Hangar’s Mike Cole had two hits and two RBIs. Duane Rivard added two hits and two RBIs as well.

• Elsewhere, John Dewicki and Tim Hoar each went 4-for-5 to help the Montague Elks to a 25-8 five-inning win over Riff’s North at Green River Field.

Hoar smacked two home runs while Dewicki also had a dinger. Julia Smith was 4-for-5 with two triples for the Elks.

Riff’s was paced by Katherine Scarborough and Nathan Scarborough, as the pair finished with three hits each.

Golf

Timmons League

Norm LaCoy and Andy Lesenski won a match of cards after combining for a low-gross 37 to lead the way Wednesday at the Timmons League played at Northfield Golf Course.

Keegan Herringshaw and Rodney Ebbighausen were the low-net winners at 28.

Lesenski was the match medalist with a 38, followed closely by Brad Stafford’s 39. Ebbighausen was closest to the pin on No. 6 (3 feet, 9 inches). Brad Kerr was closest on No. 7 (13-2).

K of C League

Al Wondoloski had a plus-8 point quota to put him atop the Knights of Columbus Golf League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club Wednesday night in Turners Falls.

Rod Brunelle also had a plus-8 quota, followed by the trio of Brian Browning, Art Girard and Dave Dion at plus-5.

Wondoloski’s big night also featured a pair of closest-to-the-pin wins. He was closest on No. 7 (9-2) and No. 9 (5-11).

Thomas Ladies League

Deb Cote’s plus-6 quota was the top score in Wednesday’s Thomas Memorial Ladies League, followed by Marilyn Kostanski and Jeanette Lawrence who were both right behind at plus-5.

Kostanski and Jenn Murphy had the low gross after rounds of 45, and Karren Sacco was closest to the pin on No. 7 at 7 feet.

Tennis

Greenfield Tennis Cup

The Greenfield Tennis Cup will take place June 25 through 28 at the Beacon Field Tennis Courts in Greenfield.

Cost is $10 plus a can of unopened tennis balls. Format is singles, best-of-three sets, with separate men’s and women’s. Players should be 16 and older.

Winners get a trophy and a $15 gift certificate to tournament sponsor Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters.
