A Montague man was sentenced to 3½1/2 years in the Franklin County House of Correction for convictions of larceny and carrying a dangerous weapon following a trial in the Franklin Superior Court.
A jury found Brian F. Ahearn, 58, of Montague guilty on two of the four charges brought against him by the prosecution from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
He was sentenced by Judge Daniel Ford to 2½1/2 years for possession of a switchblade and one year for stealing property from inside an apartment on L Street in Turners Falls on Nov. 3, 2016.
He was found not guilty of breaking into the L Street apartment, and not guilty of carrying two other dangerous weapons — a double-sided knife and brass knuckles — which were inside his backpack at the time of his arrest.
Ahearn will serve an additional two-year sentence of probation after finishing his sentence, because of a lengthy criminal record, which dates back to “the Carter administration,” Ford said, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The prosecution, led by First Assistant District Attorney Steven Gagne, had argued for a 2½1/2- to 5-year state prison sentence.
