MONTAGUE — “Want to watch me do something really, really stupid?” asked Ichabod Wainwright, also known as The Wheel Walker.

“Yes!” screamed the crowd.

Wainwright stood on top of his 30-foot-tall “Wheel of Death” contraption and waited for the audience to count down from three before he began juggling flaming axes while strolling along the wheel.

Wainwright was one of the many performers at this year’s Mutton and Mead Medieval Festival. Despite the sweltering heat, hundreds of event-goers streamed onto the Millers Falls Rod and Gun Club grounds to watch Wainwright perform and also watch jousting, sword fights, theatrical acts and more.

Visitors looking for some shade could wander through the lush Enchanted Forest along with faeries and trolls. Dulcimer music echoed throughout the trees and small children in various costumes played with one another among the leaves.

All were welcome to try their hand at free archery, eat a turkey leg or piece of mutton at one of the many food stands and watch a live birds of prey show, complete with a red-tail hawk, screech owl and American kestrel.

It was the second day of the festival’s two-day run, but the grounds were truly alive.
