I am writing to help dispel the illusion that some Bernardston voters have that recreational marijuana sales have been settled by the last town vote. It hasn’t.
Those opposed need to go to the Town Meeting on June 6 at 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Regional School to vote again, this time by a two-thirds majority to override the original vote in 2016.
Also, some townspeople have stated that the recreational sales will bring the property tax rate down in Bernardston. For the potential (up to) 3 percent tax on pot sales to lower the property tax rate, we will have to see an atomic bomb sized marijuana cloud settle over the town. And the state is not a reliable partner of tax distribution, as we have seen in reimbursement for state mandates and programs.
