SUNDERLAND — A minor fire at Delta Sand and Gravel on Route 116 Monday morning, required the response of 11 fire departments.

The fire, which was about 2,400 feet from the closest source of water and therefore requiring Sunderland Fire Department to call in mutual aid, was put out in about 15 minutes, Fire Chief Steve Benjamin said in a press release.

A large metal structure was first reported to be on fire and called into police around 9:40 a.m., according to Sunderland Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos.

Smoke billowing from the metal structure could be seen from Route 116. The  building does not house any employees, Demetropolous noted. Within half an hour the smoke had diminished. By 11 a.m. fire crews started to leave, Benjamin said.

There are no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Responding to the fire were: Sunderland Police Department, fire departments from Amherst, Whately, South Deerfield, Hadley, Conway, Old Deerfield, Leverett, Montague Center, Greenfield and Orange.  South County EMS also responded.
