Buddy Carr and Billy Philpott both potted hat tricks, and the UMass men’s lacrosse team blasted Hofstra, 14-6, in a Colonial Athletic Association contest Friday at Garber Field in Amherst.

The Minutemen (10-4, 5-0 CAA) closed out their regular-season with a perfect league mark and winners of nine games in a row. The team will host the CAA Tournament set to begin on Thursday.

Chris Connolly and Jesse Leung tallied twice for UMass against Hofstra (6-7, 2-3). Connolly registered two assists, while Jeff Trainor dished out three assists in the win.

Goalkeeper Sean Sconone recorded 14 saves in the UMass net. The Minutemen stormed out to a 9-3 halftime lead and never looked back.

UM baseball falls

George Mason right-hander Zach Mort went seven innings without allowing a hit as the Patriots outlasted the UMass baseball team, 2-1, on Friday in Atlantic 10 action. Mort went the distance and allowed just two hits to secure the victory (5-2).

On the other side, UMass junior Justin Lasko pitched well and dealt his second consecutive complete game effort, although he was the recipient of the tough-luck loss (3-3).

Aside from a walk to Cooper Mrowka in the third inning, Mort did not allow a single baserunner until Justen Voghel was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth. After Brett Evangelista replaced Voghel as a pinch runner, he moved up to second base on an Alec Norton groundout. In a pinch hit situation, Andrew Noonan then broke up the no-hit effort with a single to center field that plated Evangelista.

The Patriots’ two runs came via solo homers off the bat of Greg Popatak. In the bottom of the second inning Popatak clubbed a 1-2 offering over the right field fence to give Mason a 1-0 lead. He went yard again in the sixth with what would prove to be the difference in the game.

The loss drops the Minutemen to 11-20 on the season and 4-12 in the Atlantic 10, while George Mason is now 17-22 and 8-5 against league opponents.

The sides play the middle game of their three-game series today at 2 p.m.
