LEVERETT — Incumbents are seeking to retain seats on several boards and committees at town election Saturday.

Voters will continue a longstanding practice in Leverett to nominate and elect candidates from the floor of Annual Town Meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. at the Leverett Elementary School gym.

Leverett is the only community in Massachusetts that uses this practice, which means residents don’t have to obtain nomination forms to have their names printed on a ballot and, unless there are active political campaigns, it can be uncertain who is interested in being elected.

Still, some incumbents have announced they would serve again. Julia Shively is seeking a fourth, three-year term on the Selectboard, while Levin Schwartz and Bethany Seeger will aim to keep their three-year positions on the School Committee, and Ken Kahn will attempt to retain a five-year seat on the Planning Board.

John Hillman and David Stultz are running again for three- and two-year positions on the Board of Health, respectively. Brian Emond is seeking re-election as constable for three years, Tom Powers for a three-year seat he has held on the Finance Committee and Lisa Werner for another three-year term as a trustee for the Leverett Library.

Incumbents not seeking re-election include Jim Hicks for a three-year position on the Board of Assessors and Jill Roberts for a one-year seat on the Board of Health.

Incumbents undecided about running include Rachel Flint for a three-year position as a library trustee and Richard Brazeau for a three-year term on the Board of Health. The other position available is a three-year position that has been vacant on the Finance Committee.
