After falling in a tight second set, Athol High School rebounded with two wins to close out Southwick-Tolland Regional High School, 25-16, 25-27, 26-24, 25-20, in an independent boys’ volleyball match Wednesday night in Southwick.

The Red Raiders improved to 7-3 overall with the victory, their second in a row. Athol is back in action tonight when Leominster High School comes to Mallet Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. start.

Justin Blake continued his strong run of play with a team-high 19 kills against Southwick. Jordan Carrasquillo joined him in double figures with 10 kills. Nick Casella contributed nine kills.

Colby Soltysik just missed 50 assists in the victory, as the sophomore amassed 49 assists for Athol.

Blake and Casella had 19 digs each to lead the defensive effort. Hudson Carlson amassed two solo blocks, while Zach Aldich contributed all over with three kills, an ace and two digs.

Preps

NMH lacrosse falls

Isaac Pope had two goals, and Zack Gordon and Charlie Kenyon also tallied, but Northfield Mount Hermon School fell to St. Paul’s School, 11-4, in a boys’ lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon.

Field hockey

Franklin County clinic

Registrations are now being accepted for the Franklin County Field Hockey Clinic, which will take place July 9 through 13 at Greenfield High School.

The clinic is run by GHS coach Erin Thayer as well as Green Wave players. It is open to students entering grades third through seventh.

The clinic runs each day from 9 a.m. until noon and costs $150. Players can purchase an equipment package (which includes stick, ball, bag and shin guard) for an additional $56. Mouth guards must be warn to play.

The clinic will focus on stretching and footwork drills, fundamental skills, and offensive and defensive skills as well as small games and 7 vs. 7 scrimmages.

Turners Suburban tryouts

The Turners Falls 14-and-under Suburban softball team will hold tryouts on May 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School varsity softball field. The rain date is May 13.

One parent or guardian must be present after tryouts for a quick overview of the summer league. A player is eligible if she did not turn 15 before Jan 1, 2018.

League play begins on June 19 and ends the week of Aug. 6. Games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

GHS baseball breakfast

The Greenfield High School baseball team will host a breakfast fundraiser on Sunday at the 99 Restaurant.

The fundraiser will run from the hours of 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m., and cost is $9 per person. Tickets are available at the door or players on the team will also be selling them.

Tennis

Greenfield Rec League

Registration is open for the Greenfield Recreation Tennis League, with play set to begin the week of May 20.

The league is open to players 16 years old to adult. There will be one match per week on the clay courts in Greenfield. The format is singles, best-of-three sets, and players set up their own time to play.

FC Hoop Clinic

The 21st annual Franklin County Hoop Clinic sponsored by DRIVE Hoops will take place from July 16 through 20 at Greenfield High School.

The clinic will run daily from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is open to boys and girls ages 6 through 14. Cost is $150 per participant and includes breakfast and lunch.

The clinic, which will be limited to the first 60 participants, will be run by Hopkins Academy boys’ varsity basketball coach Angelo Thomas and Greenfield High School girls’ varsity basketball coach John Hickey.
