NORTHFIELD — In a dream come true, the Deerfield Valley Art Association celebrated the one-year anniversary of its home at 105 Main St.

The center houses the Museum of New England Art as well as a gallery and workshop area for local artists. The home is the first permanent location for the association, a nonprofit that traces its roots in New England art back over 85 years.

On Sunday, the Deerfield Valley Art Association had works on display from a number of artists in New England.

“It’s always been our dream to have our own gallery and workshop and museum,” Beverly Phelps, former president and current board member for the art association, said.

The gallery featured works from 13 artists during the event, according to Marge Anderson, programming chairwoman and art association board member. The works on display ranged from realist to impressionist.

In addition, the gift shop featured works from about 50 artists, Anderson said. The pieces included jewelry, elegant prints of animals and even kitchen wares.

The works rotate regularly, according to volunteer coordinator and board member Linda Keech, with new pieces or artists being shown every six to eight weeks. This work is done exclusively by about 50 volunteers, Keech said.

Deerfield Valley Art Association president Bucky Callery said the Northfield location is one that he hopes will attract artists and enthusiasts alike.

“We want this to be a destination,” Callery said. “A place that people think of when looking for arts and crafts.”

He said that arts of all kinds are welcome, including theater and music, and the artists can come from anywhere in New England.

“We want to connect future generations” to art, Callery said.

Phelps said should Thomas Aquinas College come to Northfield, this could open the door to young and budding artists seeking a location to create or display original art.

The gallery is open to visitors Friday through Sunday, from 12 to 4 p.m.
