The UMass softball team earned its 10th consecutive victory with a 8-4 win over St. Joseph’s in a Sunday Atlantic 10 matchup at Sortino Field in Amherst.
UMass swept its third straight conference foe and is now 20-10 overall, and 9-0 in league play. The team is hitting .389 during its 10-game winning streak, in which it has outscored opponents by 70 runs.
The Hawks scored a run in the top of the first inning to take their only lead of the weekend series, but UMass pitcher Kiara Oliver went on to retire eight straight hitters, and Meg Colleran came on in the sixth inning and closed out the win. Oliver is now 11-2 in her freshman campaign. Kaycee Carbone had two hits and four RBIs to pace the offense on Sunday.
UMass also defeated St. Joseph’s, 8-3, and 4-0, Saturday.
The Minutewomen have six games this week, beginning Tuesday when they travel to Boston College.
Lacrosse
A fourth-quarter comeback helped the UMass men’s lacrosse team to its sixth consecutive victory with a 9-8 win over Delaware Friday evening in a Colonial Athletic Association game in Newark, Del.
UMass trailed 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter but came from behind by outscoring the Blue Hens, 4-1, in the fourth quarter. Jeff Trainor registered a hat trick in the win, which included the eventual game-winning goal.
Noah Rak and Shane Rinkus each scored in the first 20 seconds of the fourth quarter to quickly tie up the game, and Chris Connolly gave UMass its first lead of the day when he scored with just over 12 minutes to play. The defenses dug in from there, and the game was scoreless for 11 minutes, until Trainor found the back of the net with 1 minute, 13 seconds to play to give the Minutemen (7-4 overall, 2-0 CAA) a 9-7 lead. That goal proved to be huge as Delaware cut the deficit to one on a Charlie Kitchen goal with 40 seconds to play.
Sean Sconone made 12 saves in relief of starter Hampton Brannon to earn the win. UMass returns home to Garber Field in Amherst on Saturday to face Towson at 1.
Baseball
Drew Reveno took a no-hitter into the fourth inning lead Saint Louis Universityto a 6-2 win over UMass in an Atlantic 10 baseball game in St. Louis.
The Billikens completed a three-game sweep of the Minutemen (9-12, 2-7 A-10) over the weekend to improve to 21-9 on the season.
Noah Kessinger and Justen Voghel each went 2-for-4 on the day for UMass, while Eddy Hart walked to extend his reached-base streak to nine games, and Logan Greene reached base for his eighth straight contest.
Saint Louis also defeated the Minutemen on Friday (6-1) and Saturday (11-7).
Lacrosse
Owen Ray registered a hat trick on Saturday as Avon Old Farms defeated Northfield Mount Hermon School, 17-0, in a boys’ prep lacrosse game in Gill.
Darian Cook, George Pike, Ford Malter, John Warner and John Collins each scored twice in the win, while Ryan Phillips, Andrew Merrell, Chase Maitland and Tyson Allison notched one goal apiece. William Collins made one save to earn the shutout.
Jacob Schultz stopped 14 shots in the Hoggers’ goal, and Connor Theriault stopped a pair of shots.
• In other action, Nolen Rockefeller played well offensively for Deerfield Academy on Saturday and the Big Green knocked off Westminster School, 9-4, in Simsbury, Conn.
Deerfield is now 2-1 on the season.
• In girls’ action, Deerfield dropped a 6-5 decision to Middlesex School Saturday in Concord.
Tennis
NMH defeated Kimball Union Academy, 6-1, in a boys’ prep tennis match Saturday in Gill.
Baseball
Deerfield picked up its first win of the season on Saturday as it defeated Cushing Academy, 5-1, in a prep baseball game in Deerfield.
Deerfield is now 1-1 on the young season.
Water polo
The Deerfield girls’ water polo team split a doubleheader Saturday at the Hotchkiss School in Salisbury, Conn.
Deerfield defeated Hotchkiss, 14-6, but fell to Greenwich Academy, 14-7.
Babe Ruth signups
The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League has three registration sessions scheduled at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield this week.
League officials will be at Abercrombie on Wednesday and Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and again on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
The league does not interfere with school baseball.
