Maddie Clough scored six goals and Deerfield Academy stormed out to a big early lead en route to a 16-10 victory over Suffield Academy in girls’ varsity water polo action Wednesday afternoon in Deerfield.
The Big Green (1-1) took a 4-0 lead after one quarter and upped the advantage to 10-2 at halftime. It was 15-6 after three before Suffield closed the gap late.
Nikita Pelletier and Bailey Smith each scored four goals for Deerfield, while Izzy Ortiz and Monet Meyer also tallied in the win.
Doris Zhang made three saves for the Big Green, while Sydney Bluestein also turned back three shots. Amanda Brooks added a save.
• In other action, the boys’ varsity lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season thanks to a 10-8 defeat of Berkshire School on Wednesday.
The girls’ varsity lacrosse team dropped a 10-6 decision to St. Mark’s School.
NMH blanked by Choate
Jacob Schultz recorded 26 saves in net but Northfield Mount Hermon School dropped a 19-0 decision to Choate Rosemary Hall Wednesday afternoon in boys’ varsity lacrosse action.
Connor Theriault added three saves during his time in the NMH goal.
George Leboeuf and Rob Armour had three goals each to pace Choate.
Post 81 tryouts nearing
Greenfield Post 81, which features both a senior and junior team, will be conducting registration and tryouts at Veterans Memorial Field at 2 p.m. on the following dates: April 29, May 5, May 6 and May 12. Senior team members must be 19 and under, while juniors must be 17 and under, by Dec. 31, 2018.
Players from all Franklin County schools are eligible to try out. Players are encouraged to make as many tryouts as possible. Please bring your glove, cleats and birth certificates. Those players from a previous Post 81 roster must attend tryouts to be eligible for the 2018 team.

FC Babe Ruth
The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League will hold additional registrations for the 2018 season this week.
The league does not coincide with school baseball.
The sign-ups will be held at Greenfield Middle School Friday night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., as well as Frontier Regional School in South Deerfield Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Additional sign-up sessions will occur at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
The league is open to ballplayers ranging in age from 13 to 15. The cutoff date is April 30, which means candidates can’t turn 13 or 16 before that date. The league is also open to 12-year-olds, who are playing on 70 or 90 foot diamonds.

Edge Basketball Blast
The seventh annual Keene State “Edge” Basketball Blast will take place May 12 and 13 at Keene State University.
Cost is $300 per team and is open to teams of girls and boys in grades fourth through 12th.
