The Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club Women’s Wednesday Night League will hold its opening practice round and meeting on April 25.

Union 38 softball

Union 38 district is looking for girls from Conway, Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately in grades 7 through 9 who would be interested in continuing to play softball with the Recreation Department. You must not be 16 before Sept. 1 and can not be in 10th grade or higher. Participants can not be on a varsity team. JV players are allowed, but can not pitch.

The district is forming a team to practice and play games once a week. The team will join the Quabbin Valley League that includes teams from Belchertown and South Hadley. This is a recreational league. Travel players may participate to get those players additional playing time that they are not receiving at that level. The season runs from May 19 through June 24.

The team will be supplied with balls and a uniform shirt. The cost is $60 and registration forms can be found online at www.deerfieldma.us. Please register by April 15. Post 81 tryouts nearing

Greenfield Post 81, which features both a senior and junior team, will be conducting registration and tryouts at Veterans Memorial Field at 2 p.m. on the following dates: April 29, May 5, May 6 and May 12. Senior team members must be 19 and under, while juniors must be 17 and under, by Dec. 31, 2018.

Players from all Franklin County schools are eligible to try out. Players are encouraged to make as many tryouts as possible. Please bring your glove, cleats and birth certificates. Those players from a previous Post 81 roster must attend tryouts to be eligible for the 2018 team.

FC Babe Ruth

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League will hold additional registrations for the 2018 season this week.

The league does not coincide with school baseball.

The sign-ups will be held at Greenfield Middle School tonight and Friday night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., as well as Frontier Regional School in South Deerfield tonight and Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Additional sign-up sessions will occur at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday.

The league is open to ballplayers ranging in age from 13 to 15. The cutoff date is April 30, which means candidates can’t turn 13 or 16 before that date. The league is also open to 12-year-olds, who are playing on 70 or 90 foot diamonds.

Deerfield rec baseball

Deerfield residents ages 4 and 5 will have an opportunity to play baseball this spring.

The Smart Start Baseball program is a developmentally appropriate program that prepares children for organized baseball in a fun environment. The group will meet four times. Parents will work one-on-one with their child teaching them the basics of baseball: throwing, catching, batting and running.

A parent must attend every session with their child. Participants will receive a bat and a ball as well as a glove. Please wear sneakers and bring a water bottle with you to each session.

The program is for 4- and 5-year-olds (not in kindergarten) and their parents. It will run each Monday from April 23 until May 21 (not on May 7) from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. at the Old Deerfield Ballfield. The cost is $40 and checks can be made payable to Town of Deerfield.

Union 38 field hockey

Union 38 will hold an introductory field hockey program for girls in grades 3 through 6 from the towns of Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway this spring.

Missy Mahar, the Frontier Regional School field hockey coach, will focus on skill development with a variety of drills and learning scenarios. Field hockey sticks, shin guards and balls will be provided to the first 35 girls that register. Girls are asked to wear a mouth guard and bring a water bottle.

The program takes place Sundays from April 22 through May 20 from 4-5 p.m. at the Frontier Regional School field hockey field. Registration is $20 with a $50 equipment deposit (separate checks). Equipment pick up is April 22 at Frontier in the parking lot next to the tennis courts. Checks will be returned on May 20 when all equipment is returned.

CVSOA course

The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for candidates for membership during April and May.

Members of the CVSOA officiate scholastic matches in Franklin and Hampshire counties during the fall. Members must by 18 years of age or older and must pass a national background check.
