Brendan Driscoll poured in 23 points and the Turners Falls Elks blasted Palmer, 49-22, in a Suburban League grades 7 and 8 boys’ basketball contest Wednesday.

Jake Lavin joined him in double figures with 12 points. Cayden Lehtomaki tossed in 6 points and Vinny Renaud added 4.

Pioneer Suburban 5/6 

Josh Wood hit a 3-pointer to give Pioneer a lead with 45 seconds remaining, and the squad held on for a 45-42 win over Chicopee in a grades 5 and 6 Suburban boys’ basketball playoff game Wednesday night at Chicopee Comprehensive High School.

Wood led Pioneer with a game-high 20 points including three 3-pointers. Gavin Gammell had 10 points and Jake Brook added 9. Kurt Redeker played outstanding defense, limiting Chicopee’s big man Luis Rodriguez to just 4 second-half points.

Pioneer moves on to face No. 1 seed and undefeated Easthampton.

Newt Guilbault registrations

The Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League will hold final registrations March 10 from 8 to 9 a.m. at Turners Falls High School and tryouts will immediately follow from 9 to 11 a.m.

GGSL registrations

The Greenfield Girls Softball League will hold registrations on three days in March for the upcoming season.

Signups will take place on March 10 and March 17 from 9 until 11 a.m. at the Greenfield Elks Lodge.

The league is open to girls from any town ages 5 through 12.

Mahar boys pentathlon

Hugo Frost broke his own school record, leading Mahar Regional School in the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) Pentathlon Wednesday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury.

Frost scored 2,805 points to set the school mark, putting him 26th overall out of 108 competitors. Ash Shaw broke the school record in the 1,000 meters, and he wound up 30th overall.

Aaron Hendry set several personal bests on the day en route to a 61st place performance.

Pioneer coach sought

Pioneer Valley Regional School is looking for a middle school baseball coach for the upcoming season.
