Kris Selanis celebrated in a big way on Saturday.
One week after finishing second at the MIAA Division V State Track & Field Championships, Selanis broke his own school shot-put record and cruised to a title at the MIAA All-State Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Selanis put the shot 56 feet, 1¾ inches to win the event by nearly two feet over Catholic Memorial High School’s Dylan Murad, who finished second at 54-2¼. The Athol senior entered the event ranked fourth but outdid his previous best throw of 54-10 to win the title. Aiden Felty of Innovation Academy, who beat Selanis at the Division V meet and was the top seed, had a rough day, finishing 16th, nearly 10 feet behind Selanis.
Selanis qualified for this weekend’s New England Championships, which will also take place at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday. He will not be alone.
Joining Selanis at the New Englands will be Mohawk Trail Regional High School junior Meghan Davis, who finished third in the girls’ 2-mile with a time of 11:07.80. Amherst Regional High School junior Sophia Jacobs-Townsley won the event in 10:54.41. Greenfield High School’s Amy O’Sullivan finished 20th in the event at 12:35.51.
Athol’s Mason Barrieau was 14th in the 600 at 1:24.39, while Pioneer Valley Regional School’s Scott McDonough picked up a 14th-place finish in the long jump at 19-11.
Mahar Regional School’s 4 x 200-meter relay team of Aaron Hendry, Hugo Frost, Aiden Didonato and Jamie Teele took 11th in 1:34.10, while the school’s 4 x 400 team of Frost, Henry, Ash Shaw and Sebastian Shaw finished 18th in 3:34.83. Athol also qualified in the 4 x 200 and the foursome of James Laford, Gabe Roberts, Chase Michaud and Barrieau finished 18th in 1:37.10.
