Claudio Morth nearly broke a distance record Sunday as he won the Fred Harris Memorial Ski Jumping Tournament at Harris Hill in Brattleboro, Vt.

Morth, a 17-year-old from Austria, soared 103 meters, falling one meter short of the hill’s record. Matej Likar, 27, of Slovenia came in second, and Dominik Schwei, 17, of Austria took third. Marlboro College senior Chris Lamb, 28, of Andover, N.H., finished fourth.

In the men’s division, Decker Dean, 17, of Colorado won, while Andrew Urlaub, 16, of Illinois took second.

Tara Geraghty-Moats, 24, of Vermont won the women’s division with 205½ points. Logan Sankey, 19, of Colorado took second, and Annika Belshaw, 15, of Colorado took third.

The nearly century-old event featured athletes from nine states, as well as Austria and Slovenia. Fred Harris began the event 96 years ago, and his daughter, Sandy, presented the weekend’s winners with medals.

Morth also won Saturday’s event.

High school

GHS JV falls

Martin Given and Kyle Barnes each scored on Sunday afternoon but Greenfield High School suffered a 6-2 loss to Westfield in a junior varsity hockey game at Fitzpatrick Arena in Holyoke.

Westfield scored one minute into the game but Given tied things up 30 seconds later on a pass from Brandon Green. Westfield again went ahead with a goal in the second period, but Barnes tied the game on assists from Porter Clancy and Adam Savoy two minutes later.

Westfield scored late in the second and then tacked on three third-period goals to pull away.

Alex Gurganus stopped 28 shots in the loss. Connor Arpide and Devin Carty each played well defensively.

Youth hockey

Dillon’s cruises

Hunter Haughey recorded a hat trick Sunday to lead the Franklin County Hockey Association Dillon Chevrolet Warriors to an 8-1 win over Holy Name Black in a Greater Springfield League Bantam Division hockey game at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Shea Savage scored his first goal of the year, and MJ Paulin and Kameron Tompkins each had a goal and an assist. Matt Provencal and Sam Knight each scored once, while Billy Woodall and Colin Byrnes had one assist apiece.

Trevor Parkinson (22 saves) and Josh Bordeaux (11 saves) combined on the win between the pipes. Dylan Mahar and RJ Grondin played well defensively.

Gilmore-Farrell falls

Will Cowie stopped 15 shots and Shane Bussard had three blocked shots Sunday to pace the defense, but the FCHA Gilmore & Farrell Vipers dropped a 5-4 decision to Ludlow in a GSL Peewee North Division game at Collins-Moylan Arena.

Matt Lavoine had three goals and one assist in the loss. Hunter Smith had one goal and three helpers. Trevor Kuchieski and Braeden Killeen each finished with an assist.

Jake Jurek, Brodie Gagne, Killeen, Dylan Archer and Chris Phelps played well defensively.

Preps

Wrestling

John Chung, Henry Hayden and Conrad Freire each finished eighth in their respective weight classes for Deerfield Academy at the New England Prep Wrestling Championships over the weekend at Tabor Academy in Marion.

Hockey

Mary Edmonds scored on assists from Mae Emerson and Christina Halloran and Deerfield tied Hotchkiss School, 1-1, in a girls’ prep hockey game Saturday in Deerfield.

The win ran the Big Green’s unbeaten streak to five games.

• On the boys’ side, Phillips Exeter Academy defeated Deerfield, 4-1, Saturday in Exeter.

• On Friday, Deerfield edged Williston-Northampton School, 1-0.

Swimming

The Deerfield boys’ swimming and diving team edged Loomis Chaffee School, 95-91, in a prep meet Saturday in Windsor, Conn.

The Big Green girls’ team fell to Loomis, 104-82.

Squash

The Deerfield boys’ and girls’ squash teams each earned 6-1 wins over Exeter Saturday in Deerfield.

Basketball

Deerfield won its second consecutive boys’ basketball game on Friday with a 55-38 victory over St. Paul’s School in Deerfield.

• On the girls’ side, Deerfield was knocked out of the Eight Schools Basketball Tournament with a 61-52 quarterfinal loss to Phillips Andover Academy Friday in Andover.
