TURNERS FALLS — Residents who want to support the Pioneer Valley Regional School sports teams while showing off their knowledge of trivia are in luck.

The PVRS Sports Boosters, a parent-led nonprofit that was organized last fall in support of the school’s athletic programs, is holding a trivia night on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Montague Elks Lodge, 1 Elk Ave. in Turners Falls.

Kristen Gonzalez, president of the PVRS Sports Boosters, said there will be 10 trivia categories, including sports, history, pop culture “and everything in between.” Teams, which each need a name, should include eight to 10 people.

The entry charge is $10 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the Sports Boosters. Since the group started, Gonzalez said it’s purchased materials for the Athletic Department’s first-aid kits.

“We are a new group and we’re starting with zero dollars,” Gonzalez said, noting that parents contributed to get the group off the ground.

The Boosters formed largely by word of mouth among parents, Gonzalez said. With her own daughter, Pioneer seventh-grader Julia Kovalsick, being involved in multiple sports, Gonzalez wanted to create a group to support the athletes.

“Our goal was to really support the student athletes and bring the community together,” she said. “I think it’s important for kids to have the community behind them.”

Since organizing, the Boosters have operated concession stands at games and held a “Rock the House” night involving two boys’ basketball games, raffles, prizes and a half court shot contest. Trivia night was also a popular idea among Boosters organizers, Gonzalez said, and is something the group hopes to do annually if it’s successful.

Gonzalez hopes trivia night will help the new group get its name out while getting the community more involved in Pioneer athletics.

Participants are encouraged to arrive between 6 and 6:30 p.m., and may bring their own snacks, according to the Eventbrite posting. A cash bar will be available.
