Matt Murray finished with 29 saves to help the University of Massachusetts to a 3-0 victory over eighth-ranked Northeastern University in a Hockey East game Friday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
The Minutemen (11-10-1, 5-6-1) took advantage of a pair of five-minute majors in the contest, as a pair of Huskies were shown the gate following major penalties. One of those penalties came on a boarding call that injured Cale Maker. The UMass defenseman left the ice briefly before returning.
Mitchell Chaffee got the scoring started midway through the second period, putting the Minutemen up 1-0 with a goal from Ivan Chukarov and Jake Gaudet.
Chaffee doubled the advantage on the power play just 3:33 after his first of the night, this time taking assists from John Leonard and Oliver Chau to put UMass up 2-0.
UMass made it 3-0 early in the third when Austin Plevy found the back of the net. Mario Ferraro and Jack Suter were credited with assists on the play.
Northeastern fell to 14-6-3, 10-4-1 in Hockey East.
The two teams play again tonight in Boston.
