Crumpin-Fox Club won eight of 12 head-to-head matches Sunday afternoon to secure the 18th annual Franklin Cup, 14-10, over the defending champion Country Club of Greenfield at Crumpin-Fox in Bernardston.
The Ryder Cup-style tournament opened Saturday with four-ball matches and foursome (alternate shot) matches and the action was tied at 6-6 heading into Day 2 of the event. CFC took control of the tournament on the final day with eight individual wins.
Chris Stoddard defeated Mike Johnson 2-up in one match, while Justin Dion won 4 and 3 over Jason Kelton in another. Scott Dorval beat Garrett Cousineau 2 and 1, Mark Waskiewicz defeated Pat McGuire 2 and 1 and Keith Burch beat Donald Foberg 2 and 1. Chris Austin topped Nate Burdick 4 and 2, Brett Barnes beat KC Finley 3 and 2, and Erik Barnes defeated Brodie Conant 5 and 4.
That gave CFC its second win in the past seven years. The Country Club still holds a 10-7-1 record all-time. CFC also won two years ago, 16-8.
Jake Willis defeated Jason Wallace 3 and 2 for an individual win for the Country Club on Sunday, and David Kennedy beat Rich Carroll 7 and 5. Chris Bourbeau beat Phil Phillips 1-up, and Tom Bergeron defeated Douglas Taylor 2 and 1.
CFC won three of the six Saturday four ball matches, with one match halved. Austin and Burch, Waskiewicz and Stoddard, and Carroll and Taylor each won for Crumpin-Fox. Johnson and McGuire and Finley and Kennedy won for the Country Club.
The Country Club came back and won three of six Foursome matches, with one being halved. Johnson and McGuire, Kelton and Foberg and Kennedy and Burdick each won for the Country Club, while Dion and Burch, and Barnes and Brett Barnes won for CFC.
GHS Hockey Outing
Tim Farrell, Brodie Conant, Casey Fahey and Scott Cote shot a 54 to win low gross during the 2017 GHS Hockey Outing at the Country Club of Greenfield on Friday.
Cam Merrigan, Pat Merrigan, Ryan Martin and Steve Colby came in second with a 57.
Matt Bete, Paul French, Dawn Bete and Kim French won low net with a 55, while Joe Geyster III, Joey Geyster, Zack Geyster and Chris Demars came in second in 56.
Chris Connelly, Mark Cady, Robbie Haigh and Kaitlyn Byron-Suchanek won the Mixed low gross with a 57.
UMass hockey wins
Niko Rufo’s first-period power-play goal proved to be the lone goal of the game as UMass defeated Queens College, 1-0, in an exhibition hockey game Saturday night in Amherst.
Sophomore Jake McLaughlin fed Rufo, a graduate transfer, for the goal. The Minutemen goalie tandem of Ryan Wischow, Matt Murray and Brad Arvanitis combined on the shutout with 25 saves.
Junior Bulldogs roll
Joseph White scored a pair of touchdowns and got the game-deciding conversion as the Franklin County Bulldogs defeated Easthampton, 14-12, in a Suburban League Junior Division football game Saturday at White Brook Middle School in Easthampton.
White finished with 120 rushing yards in the victory, while Vincent Renauld (29 yards) and Brayden Arsenault (27 yards) each contributed to the offense.
White also finished with seven tackles to lead the defense, while Renauld and Ryan Grace each added a sack, and William Ainsworth recovered a fumble. Renauld added five tackles, Hugh Cyhowski had four, and Bryce Avery, David Damkoehler, Oliver Postera and London Washington each added three tackles. Ryan Grace, Alex Knapp and Eli Dresser finished with two tackles apiece.
Peewee Bulldogs win
Davian Balla rushed for 82 yards to go with a touchdown and an extra point to lead the Franklin County Bulldogs to a 20-0 win over Easthampton in a SL Peewee Division football game Saturday night at White Brook Middle School in Easthampton.
Zaydrien Alamed rushed for 54 yards and two scores in the win, and Gavin Arsenault added 18 rushing yards. Matthew Richotte, Jonathan Ainsworth, Jayden Sanchez, Brenton Russell, Ronnie Stone, Corbin Conway, D’Angelo Brown, Nehemiah Rice, Brody Girard and Ethan Burgh each did well blocking in the victory.
Zavi Nieves finished with nine tackles an recovered a fumble in the win, and Rice added six tackles. Balla had four tackles and forced two fumbles, while Ainsworth and Brown each had three tackles. Alamed and Arsenault finished with two tackles each, and Dustin Reade made one tackle.
Football
The Deerfield Academy football team improved to 2-1 on the season as it knocked off Hotchkiss School, 26-0, in a game Saturday in Deerfield.
Soccer
Deerfield defeated Kent School, 2-0, in a boys’ prep soccer game Saturday in Kent, Conn.
Deerfield is now 3-3-0 on the season.
• On the girls’ side, Pomfret School defeated Deerfield, 3-0, Saturday in Pomfret, Conn.
Deerfield fell to 0-2-2 on the year.
Field hockey
Deerfield earned its second straight field hockey victory with a 4-0 win over Phillips Exeter Academy Saturday in Deerfield.
The Big Green improved to 4-1-0 on the season.
Water polo
Deerfield won its second straight water polo match with a 17-8 victory over St. John’s Prep Saturday in Danvers.
DA is now 4-3.
Cross country
The Deerfield boys’ and girls’ cross country teams each won at the Westminster Invitational Saturday in Simsbury, Conn.
Fall Babe Ruth
Dalton Henderson and Hugh Cyhowski each had a single and an RBI but Franklin County Gray suffered a 10-4 loss to Westfield Orange in a Babe Ruth Fall League baseball game Sunday at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.
Nate Sciandra doubled in the loss.
Fall Varsity League
Wyatt Bandy Page went 2-for-3 on Sunday and J.S. Rae defeated Easthampton, 2-1, in a Fall Varsity Baseball League game at East Longmeadow High School.
Cullen Brown and Jared Ackerman each had one hit in the win. Ackerman (two strikeouts), Kyle Devlin (three strikeouts) and Bandy-Page combined to earn the win.
• Also Sunday, Sam Bobala went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI but J.S. Rae fell to Chicopee Astros, 3-1.
Dylan Allen doubled and scored a run for J.S. Rae.
Bobala struck out five in three scoreless innings, while Joel Peabody struck out four in three innings of relief.
