Country Club of Greenfield member Don Foberg fired a two-round total of 142, putting him at even par for the tournament and good enough for a second-place tie at the 57th Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship Tuesday at Oakley Country Club in Watertown.
Foberg, who played out of Plymouth Country Club, tied with Dave Houghton of The Captains Golf Course at even-par, two shots back of champion Keith Smith of Franklin Country Club (2-under). Foberg shot rounds of 70 and 72 for the runner-up finish.
Fellow CCG member Tom Bergeron also performed well, finishing in a tie for 31st place with a final score of 150 (8-over). Bergeron fired identical rounds of 75, finishing in the upper third of the 100-plus participant event.
CCG Ladies 18-hole
Teresa Varner’s low-gross 89 was the story of the day Tuesday, as she paced the field at the Country Club of Greenfied Ladies 18-hole end of season Nassau Tournament.
Phyllis Canon had the low gross on the front nine with a 44. Jane Plumley posted the low gross on the back nine with a 44.
Carol Ruggeri posted the low net with a 68 over 18 holes. Ginny Freeman’s 33 was the low net on the front nine while Anne Echeverria’s 34 was the low net on the back nine.
Erving League
Matt Deane and Paul Barnard combined to shoot 37, capturing low-gross honors Tuesday at the Erving League held Tuesday at Northfield Golf Club.
Gary Sakowicz and Jack Letourneau were the low-net winners with a 28, while Barnard was closest to the pin on No. 6 (11 feet, 8 inches) and Deane was closest on No. 7 (12-8).
Brian Deane was the match medalist with a 39, one stroke ahead of Matt Deane’s 40.
The Erving League’s annual scramble is set for Oct. 14. Non-league players are welcome to play. For details, contact the Northfield Golf Club.
Northampton Coed league
The Northampton Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its Coed Volleyball League.
Each team plays a 15-game regular season followed by a double-elimination playoff. The begins in mid-October and continues through December. Registration deadline is Oct. 2, and all fees, proofs, rosters and signed player conduct forms must be turned in by this time.
