It was a successful opening Wednesday-night act for Frontier Regional School in its pursuit of a whopping 13th consecutive western Massachusetts championship.
After a slow start and better second frame, the host Red Hawks held on in a tight third set to capture a 25-18, 25-10, 26-24 sweep of Chicopee Comprehensive High School in season-opening independent action at the Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
“We didn’t look smooth in the first set,” admitted Frontier coach Sean MacDonald. “But overall it was a good start to the season. We got everybody in and they all got a little bit of playing time. Hopefully the nerves get out of their system and we can play a little better on Friday.”
Setter Ella Deane dished out 11 assists in the win for Frontier (1-0), while Lauren Davenport put down six kills to go with three aces and three digs. Olivia Deane added five kills, while Selayna Bathurst notched four kills and contributed four aces. Sarah Zoly paced the strong service attack with six aces.
The Red Hawks take to the road for the first time on Friday night, when they visit Westfield High School in another independent match.
FC Tech 13, McCann Tech 12 — Travis Cutting and Hunter Sessions shared medalist honors with one other player, and the Franklin County Technical School duo helped lift the Eagles to a razor-tight 13-12 victory over McCann Technical School in a Bi-County West golf match played Wednesday at Forest Park Country Club in Adams.
Cutting and Sessions tied with McCann Tech’s Ryan Baran for medalist honors with rounds of 45.
All six Eagle (1-0, 1-0) golfers shot 53 or better to capture the season-opening win. Nate Pelletier shot 47 on the afternoon, while Michael Patnode (50), Mike McGoldrick (52) and Matt Jette (53) all performed well in the Berkshires.
Tech travels to Sabis International Charter School on Tuesday for its next Bi-County West match.
