NEW SALEM — Three people were sent to the hospital — one via emergency medical helicopter when two motorcycles collided on Route 122 Wednesday afternoon.

“One operator was sent by (Life Star) to Baystate Medical Center (Springfield) with serious injuries,” said State Police Trooper Paul Sullivan.

A second driver, who also sustained serious injuries, was taken by ambulance to Athol Hospital. A third passenger was taken to the same hospital with unknown injuries, according to Sullivan.

Local police were alerted around 2:45 p.m. about the accident, which happened a half mile from Route 202.

An hour later, a helicopter took off from Orange Airport. Two ambulances from Athol and Orange and rescue crews from Orange Fire and Police Departments could be seen below.

State Police Accident Reconstruction and Crime Scene officers were called to investigate.
